i mean FTR i do not support people spending money they do not have on hobbies for themselves or their kids

but, if they can afford it

its no different than someone getting lessons from a golf pro and buying new clubs. Doesn't mean I think im going pro

just like if i go buy a new bass boat and get a guide to teach me some things....that doesnt mean I think im going to be on the bass masters tour soon

just like i dont think im going to be the next duck commander because i buy a new gun, go shoot skeet and have a 10k hunting lease.

who gives a frick how others spend their money?

and the same ones that say its annoying hearing about it....they are the same ones bragging about a hunting trip they took

When my son was 16, he was selected to play on Dynamos club team. Team announces that they are playing in a tournament in Barcelona, Spain. Not BR, Not Shreveport....f'n Barcelona.

This lady has spent $16k on his career. That trip would have cost $16k alone.

On a side note, coaches announced trip on the same day that jihadist bombed Barcelona.

let me ask you a question...why is the OT ok with someone spending money on golf lessons, golf clubs, going and playing expensive courses but not someone allowing their kid to do the same in a different sport?

does the OT or your friends ask if you think you are going pro if you take golf lessons? or buy new clubs? or go play anything more than the municipal course?

what about going fishing with a guide? buying a boat and new gear? does that mean I think im going to be on the bass masters tour soon?

why are some hobbies ok...others are not for the OT?

Apples and oranges.

I'm talking about this particular story, with people spending $16k a year on travel ball. And I guess I'm looping in a couple of people I personally know who are spending money they don't have on unrealistic expectations.

I don't give a crap what people do with their money. And for the record, my kids participate in extracurricular activities and even get some lessons. But it's like 1% of our monthly budget. And I'm not betting my retirement on them going pro.

See the difference?

Did you not hear the kids name? It would have worked way better than "the dumbest fake name you used in topic

no we are 100% in agreement. I said that multiple times

i think its dumb af to spend money you dont have for any hobby, kid or adult.

the OT overall though has a problem with people spending on travel baseball even if they can afford it.

they dont deem it worthy

now....buying that new hunting camp and the 10k lease....that is OT worthy.

You must haven’t had kids in 20 years

Checked out the parks and recreation leagues lately?!

If your kid is anyway near a below average player, letting them play rec after coach ‘s pitch is a failure if you as a parent .

$16,000 a year.... They should be glad they weren't into equestrian.

I spent more than that on boarding. Not even touching feed, medicines, supplements, farrier, trailering to events, hotel rooms at shows, trainers.

I see. I don't post here much and didn't realize this was an area of deep concern.

I've planned a number of work conferences and we're all missing the scam here. Someone who plans this trip probably has an LLC corporation surrounding these activities and they get a couple tax-free trips to Barcelona and definitely free hotel rooms out of this.

I know guys who do this. One split time between Milwaukee and - get this - Barcelona. The parents of Jaxton who think their kid is getting NIL money for Georgia or LSU ball are getting fleeced but too dumb to know it.

LoL, mine are almost 30. You are correct. One did do competition cheer in school, but it was nowhere near as time consuming or costly as travel ball.

If my kid was below average, they wouldn’t be playing travel ball and would have to find another interest.

Travel baseball/youth club soccer/etc are a blight on sports. Forcing kids at a young age to specialize only hinders development.

Coaching high school sports nothing makes me more irate then when a good runner tells me they can’t do cross country because of their fricking club soccer/baseball coach telling them no. Drives me up a damn wall.

One of my friends, former 2-year Mr. Baseball in LA, has kids who are getting to the age of really segregating in sports and he preaches the hell out of non-specialization. His boy is playing at least baseball and football competitively.

umm most, at least the good athletes, play at least 1 other sport until middle school and most play 2 during middle school

but middle school becomes one of those ages where if they dont like other sports....its hard to make them play. they have tried it and didnt like it. kind of have to let them make their own decisions at that point if they have tried multiple other sports

i dunno where this idea comes from that travel ball kids dont play other sports before high school. because i rarely rarely see it.

and the guy you are replying too is bitching about kids not doing cross country in high school. cross country literally makes you worse at team sports. jogging long distance like that makes you slower, makes you less explosive and actually starts to reprogram the rate at which motor units fire

plus cross country is gay as frick

It wouldn’t be that if parents stopped the silly travel ball nonsense

This is true, but it's the nature of youth sports, today.

Growing up, we had enough kids in recreation leagues to where you could have an A league and a B league to separate the more advanced kids so every kid could feel challenged and play in a league with similarly skilled kids.

Now, starting at about 9, the more advanced kids are breaking away from the rec leagues for travel and club teams, leaving a smaller pool of kids for rec leagues, meaning no longer being able to have separate A and B leagues at the rec level.

You may still have parents wanting to keep their kids in rec leagues, but their kids are getting bored or not challenged enough when they have to play with some other kids playing and learning the sport for the first time.

Some of these baws in a tizzy about parents spending money on travel ball spending well over 15k per year on alcohol, thousands more on a boat note and hunting leases, side by sides.

it comes down to insecurity about their love for their children as parents when they choose not to commit such dedication and resources in their life to their children. :micdrop:
