My friend has 5 kids. The first week after his 5th kid was born he had a mental breakdown and cried in his car on his way to work. Yeah. There’s that. But, on the bright side, he regrets nothing and would readily die for his kids. He’s a good dad.

The infant and toddler years are rough but it’s over quickly. I look at my kids now and they are growing up fast but I just don’t feel like we are done. The oldest is great and would be a huge helper I know. I know it’ll be tough but it’s one life and I don’t wanna regret it later. Finances always seem to work out. Sleepless nights get forgotton over time. The best part of my day is when I pick up my kids, when I put them to sleep and when I wake them up each morning. I get excited to see them and hang out with them. It makes me want more of that. I used to think people were crazy to have more than 2.
The fear of an unhealthy kid or problematic pregnancy are really my only concerns now that my wife is older.

I have two kids and that is two too many

It has a lot to do with how close they are in age. I have 4. My oldest 2 were 4 years apart, my last 2 were 2 years apart.

Going from 1 to 2 was way harder than going from 2 to 3.

That’s what I’d expect. First one is hard because it’s brand new. But the 2nd is harder because you have to do it all over again while also raising a toddler. You don’t get naps or breaks anymore. I’d expect 3 or 4 to be hard but with help from first child making it less stressful and you’ve done it enough that you’re used to it and not what to do.

I have 4. They all bring different challenges. To me it has been more the nature of the kids than the number. Some sleep more than others. Some are more laid back than others. It’s realky a crap shoot. The only thing I can say for sure is that once they are here it’s hard to imagine life without them. I have never been more exhausted but I’ve never been more happy. It’s strange.

quote:I dont have any kids (yet), but I realized myself that the thought of having more kids than parents (3+ vs 1 or 2) is a scary thought. I have a close relative that had triplets a couple of years ago and I was terrified when I heard she was having 3 at once and Im not even the parent.....
With that being said, it's 100% true. I have three girls - 8,4 & 1. The oldest is becoming a great helper for the youngest, not so much with her "very annoying" 4yr old sister, lol. The hardest transition was from 2 to 3, without a shadow of a doubt,

The real question is “is there really a favorite kid”?
I mean sure there are parents that like their kids the same but I would say most have a favorite. At any time have you liked one parent more than the other? One sibling more than another? One friend or coworker over another? It’s pretty damn rare to like two totally different people the same amount.

Two years ago I was living the dream. My kids were getting to that age where they were self reliant and I had plenty of money in the bank and then...
My wife sent me a pic of a pregnancy test (positive) while I was at work. I was 42 and we already had 4 kids. I was legit depressed but kept it to myself for a while. We found out that it was going to be twin girls (our second set) and for some reason that pulled me out of the funk. I'll have to work until I'm dead but I don't have any regrets. In my experience, we made sure that our older kids are helpers. Our older set of twins can handle a lot of things that make it much easier.

You said everything I wanted to say. Actually hit me right in the feels.
I can legitimately say that I don't have a favorite of my three. They're each unique and there are things to love and things to be annoyed by with all of them.

Available free time for myself was the biggest change for me going from 2-3.
Adding the 3rd changed things exponentially in this regard, because you have to factor in that one or both of your oldest children will be involved in some level of activities and require more attention from you. This on top of being limited to what you are able to do with an infant/toddler.
People that I know with more than 3 kids seem to think 3 is when you reach “critical mass” and after which point you may as well have 4-5 kids.
There are many factors here, it's not just an assessment of numbers. That being said, having children has many intangible benefits.

5 daughters. The last 2 are twins. When the twins were born the ages were 6, 5, 1, and the new born twins. We never worked so hard in our lives to keep it all together than those first couple of years after the twins were born. My wife is a nurse so she had some early shifts and I can remember getting all 5 up, dressed, fed, in the car in more car seats than you can imagine and dropped off to school/ day care by myself. I hit the office about 8am knowing there’d be nothing I faced the rest of the day tougher than what I just handled. Long, demanding days and even years but it was all worth it. Incredible memories of their childhood.
Now they’re 24 and married, 22 and married, a senior in hs and the twins are juniors. Good times. I’ve had some really good athletes, creative kids artistically and musically, smart, funny. Oldest ones a dental hygienist. Second will be an elementary teacher. I look at them and thank God they’re so awesome and I didn’t ruin them with my impatience and selfishness. We were stretched very often but it’s all worth it as they mature- and thank God they do. I wouldn’t change anything.

Have four and are still muddling through it. Just begin right now making regular contributions to a series of 529 plans because college costs are out of control. If in Louisiana, the Louisiana START 529 can’t be beat.
