1. Exercise at least 45 mins EVERY DAY
2. Stay away from coffee and soft drinks…caffeine & sugar. Mildly sweet or unsweet tea is ok.
4. Get a lab workup to ensure you don’t have some hormone imbalances.
5. Practice diaphragm breathing.
Breathe in through nose for 7 seconds and out through mouth for 5 seconds.
6. Do your best not to let it spill over into phobias…bridges, flying, heights, water, etc.
7. SSRIs help as does 5-HTC
8. Weed is the worst thing you could turn to.
Alcohol is also terrible. Look into “rebound anxiety”.

A lot of good advice here. It’s usually a combination of physical and mental factors that create a vicious cycle. Just start fixing whatever you can and reach out to a therapist. Get on some lists asap, because it may take a while to get in. If/when it happens again, try not to panic about the panic, if you will. Know that it will pass and you just have to ride it out. Look up Box Breathing. It helps. Say the alphabet backwards. Identify something with each of your senses: what do you see, smell, feel, etc. Tap on your forehead. These things distract your brain. And mostly, don’t listen to anyone who hasn’t experienced it and says it’s all in your head. Sure it is. The brain controls the body. What’s your point?

Just the thought of all that exercise and giving up Coke is giving me a panic attack.

Same thing happened to me after a very long stressful day. Ambulance and a sheriff showed up. Go to a psychiatrist and get some medicine.

Had a friend that struggled with this all through his mid 40s to early 50s. Would wake up like you did, couldn't breathe, etc. Would go out in the yard and walk around...
Drs. attributed it to panic attacks and prescribed a light dose of Xanax. He never had any issues during the day - only at night.
Turned out he has a terrible case of A-Fib. Had the ablation procedure and has been fine ever since. He wore a heart monitor for a week - they'd call him at work and ask how he was feeling and he'd say fine..they'd say how the hell, you are in serious A-Fib right now. He never "felt" it. Not saying that's your deal - just might be a possibility to rule out.

Ive had one panic attack in my life but it wasnt the heart attack version.
I was under a ton of personal and work stress at the time. I was standing in my kitchen and it began to feel like i wasnt in my own body. I wasnt even sure if i even existed. It felt like i was the pilot of one of those giant mecha robots. I started to freak out so i jumped in my truck and drove through a car wash. When i got home i got on my hands and knees and started pulling weeds until it went away.
This was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. For a minute it felt that i lost my mind.
I was under a ton of personal and work stress at the time. I was standing in my kitchen and it began to feel like i wasnt in my own body. I wasnt even sure if i even existed. It felt like i was the pilot of one of those giant mecha robots. I started to freak out so i jumped in my truck and drove through a car wash. Could have been a TIA
I bet the OP is vaccinated....every since I got vaccinated I haven't felt the same

Fair enough. I got a lot of the same responses when it happened to me. Why are you stressed? Just don't panic. Doctors look at you like you're an idiot.
I even had a doctor give me a sample pack sort of a freshly FDA approved drug that had "promising results". Gave me the nastiest gas and made me feel loopy. Went back, and explained to him what was going on, and he said it will subside and wrote me a script. Went to fill the script, $500 a month insurance won't cover. Went back and told him to put me on something insurance will cover. He declined and gave me 3 more sample packs. I walked out and threw those in the trash and found a new doctor.

1. Talk to your PCP and get a script for Xanax. Get one of those small keychain vials, put the Xanax in it and keep it in your pocket or night stand at all times. Don't take those, though, unless you have an attack coming on because benzos can be addictive.

Sounds like a panic attack - I used to have them quite frequently as a young adult and they would trigger my asthma
I used to be embarrassed about it - but go talk to someone and figure out what’s causing them and get the help you need

Does Xanax really help with anxiety? Seems like that’d be playing with fire. That’s what I don’t understand about doctors willingness to just write prescriptions for all of these pills.

I’ve dealt with anxiety for awhile. Used to have panic attacks like how you described. There are therapists that can give you tips on how to deal with it when you feel one coming on and can also prescribe meds (although I never found Rx to work for me personally). I found that getting rid of what’s causing the anxiety completely out of your life worked. Example for me was drinking and heavy weed use. Anxiety is always something you’re worried might happen. Instead of wondering what will happen think of what Is happening. FEAR is False Evidence of Appearing Real. Pushing on your body’s pressure points is also a way to get you back into the now.

2 - Try to avoid medication, if possible. Benzos are not going to be a long term fix. Some SSRI’s help to numb the anxiety but I would recommend trying everything else before you need medication.
3 - research what anxiety/panic is so you understand what’s going on at a physiological level.
4 - life style habits can help. (Exercise, sleep routine, diet, limit caffeine/alcohol)
5 - meditation can help you accept and sit with uncomfortable feelings. Panic is an adrenaline response to an uncomfortable feeling. The idea is that you want to stop feeling anxiety about feeling anxiety
6 - get in touch with your values. Anxiety and panic cause indecisiveness. Knowing your values can help you make basic and important decisions.
7 - find meaning in what you do. A sense of meaning and purpose can overcome most trials.
8 - learn about acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). The creator recovered from panic disorder and created and empirically supported therapy similar to CBT or DBT.

Great bit of helpful advice.
A splash of very cold water on the back of the neck or face (or even better -- a cool/cold shower) helps re-boot the autonomic nervous system / visceral nervous system.
This is the reason people who've just experienced a super stressed event (as in movies) go immediately to a sink to splash water on their face. I do it upon awakening.

If you get a Benzo I recommend Valium as needed. It has a very long half life which means a lower risk of addiction.
Xanex is in and out within 8 hours which can make things worse.

Those are intended as a “break glass in case of emergency” measure and not a regular thing.
The idea is to help you come down if you have an attack, not take them to prevent them.
