It's all about sustaining victimhood. No more sympathy, no more free hand-outs or being absolved of responsibility.

Dumb in what way? My point was that context matters and people getting upset over a word being used in appropriate context is asinine.

Like I said, your point was fine, but the general argument that the word is fine because rappers say it is asinine. You weren't arguing that, but many do.

I'd really like to know why it's worse for a white person to say N***** in the context of a discussion.

But it's completely acceptable for black people in altercations with other black people to call them the following....

frick-N*****
Bitch-N****
Pussy-arse-N****
N****

The same reason it's acceptable to say "bitch" in some conversations and not to your wife.

ETA--I don't understand why people on both sides just toss comm sense to the wind. There is nothing wrong with the way Vigo said it, but there are plenty of times when it's wrong. Same with many other words.

I always thought that the proudest moment in a black man or woman's life is when they gave their little speech about how it's alright for them to say it, but not alright for you (white folk) to say it.

That pride is the equivalent of a white man giving away his daughter on her wedding day.

I myself would never use that phrase, mostly because the good book tells us "if eating meat offends your brother, then eat meat no more", and secondly, nastiness usually follows when God's instructions aren't followed. That and the fact that I understand true condescension, for when a man of color refers to me as "white boy" my first primordial instincts are to kill some mother f'cker, and there isn't even 300 years of oppression reinforcing that nastiness.

However, WHAT THE PHUCK IS A BLACK MAN DOING CALLING ANYBODY A BOY? If you really want to examine the historical degradation of words and phrases and yet still think it's cute to call me "white boy" you aren't learning a f'cking thing from history.

Idle ramblings at lunchtime!

Late to this thread. May have been covered. Was he referring to the words use in film or IRL as opposed to the 60’s?

I do find it ridiculous if the word is removed from movies like Django or Mississsippi Burning. You are NOT being authentic to a story you are trying to tell if the word is not used.

I say "night" all the time. But I get your point. Don't even think about saying "niggardly," a completely unrelated word.

It's a trashy word, used by trash people. It's never used in intelligent conversation or a compelling argument. We should recognize that it's just a good indicator of insecurity/stupidity/etc. and move on.

I use it, and when I employ in a sentence....the particular class of people I am referencing fit the descriptive word perfectly.

I think different people have different opinions about how offensive or inoffensive it is. Personally as a white guy, I don't think it's appropriate in any context but I was raised in a house where it was forbidden and my parents never used it. It sounds so ignorant, regardless of context or musical lyric.
