Looking for ownership experience, reliability, driveabilty especially as vehicle has gotten to higher mileage. Also would like to hear functionality as a tow vehicle. Considering for college age kid. Thanks for any info.

17 Silverado and I love.
I did replace the transmission at 70k which I found out is a known issue

Those are great vehicles, and probably one of my favorite body styles of modern trucks.
Rule of thumb with recent trucks - Avoid the 8 speed automatics made before 2018 from GM, and avoid the 10 speeds from Ford made until 2019. The Ram trucks with the ZF transmission during this time was actually pretty good and maybe a better choice if you aren’t certain about previous owner’s maintenance strategy.
The Duramax diesel is excellent on the 2019+ models. The V8’s are older in design but are pretty solid. The 2.7L Turbomax is really good if you can get past the idea of a large displacement turbo 4 cylinder, but those didn’t come until 2020 or so.
The 6.2 is awesome but takes premium fuel.

Was this the first edition of the 8 speed transmission? As another poster stated, the transmission is going to fail early.

Stay away . Transmission replaced right after warranty expired . Overall worst Chevy truck out of the 6 I have owned

They had issues with the earlier 8 speeds. Not sure if it was a design defect or assembly screw up, but several hundred thousand of them ended up with the wrong spec transmission fluid and GM didn’t really bother with a recall, instead just electing to fix the ones that broke under warranty and in some cases they extended the warranty for free. Condensation in the crank case happened over time because of their mistake and eventually screws up the mechanicals.
Stick to the 6 speed or 10 speed versions for and you should be good. Those are very good trucks. I would be cautious with the 8 speed unless there is a record of it being replaced.

How about a corolla?

Good choice on the Corolla. Or even a Wrangler, 4Runner, Tacoma, Ranger, or Colorado.
Parking a full sized truck on any major college campus except maybe A&M is kind of a bitch.

Had a 15. 2 transmissions in 80k miles. Bought a 18 and gave it to my son senior year or HS. It now shifts hard as hell between 50-60 mph so it's only a matter of time before it fails.

Do you love it like Novabil does his?
Life time power train warranty is now a sales pitch in LC with the GM dealers.

2020 Silverado 1500 RTS. 4x4 - 40 k miles now and zero issues up to this point. 20mpg on highway, 16ish in the city. I use it a lot to pull my boat and it doesnt get gas milage pulling that thing 8-9
Been a great vehicle so far. Has a very solid feel. Leather seats are very nice

Me and EVERY SINGLE PERSON I KNOW with a 16-19 has had to replace the transmission between 50,000-120,000 miles. Stay away.
EDIT: Apparently there is a class action suit on the 8-speed; however, I had the 6-speed as did all of the guys I am referring to above.

Without getting into specifics, will not suit the intended purpose, particularly with regards to the towing applications as mentioned in the original post. As is the problem with the smaller trucks/SUVs mentioned.

Can confirm. I have a 2018 F-150 and just replaced the transmission under warranty @ 80,000 miles.

Really liked those models, but I'm still enjoying my 2007 Sierra too much to give it up.

I watched a sedan going about 90 mph plow into a Silverado sitting next to me at a one night. The Silverado got pushed across the intersection and a cooler in the back flew out, but the truck damage was minimal and the occupants were fine.
The driver of the sedan had to be removed by the fire department and her leg bone was sticking out of her thigh.
I got a Silverado shortly thereafter. Would recommend. 10/10 for safety.

I have an ‘18 with 120,000 and have had no issues

If you find one with a 6 speed, they're good trucks. Nicer inside than the 19+ models in my opinion. I wouldn't get one with the 8 speed.

I have a 17 GMC SLT an the only problem I've had with it is the active fuel management. The 8 to 4 cylinder transitions pissed me off. Once the warranty was up I installed the Range technologies AFM disabler with no issues. Its runs on 8 cylinders all the time now.
