Best advice I can give is to get comfortable talking to all women. Don’t wait until you see one you’re interested in and try to figure out at that moment how to talk to her.
Learn to small talk to everyone. Start casual conversations with any woman you’re near in an elevator, checkout line etc. there’s no pressure when you’re not really interested and you’ll get more comfortable. After a while, striking up a conversation with the hot chick you’re interested in won’t seem so daunting. You’ll have done it many times before in random situations snd you’ll appear more comfortable to her. That confidence will help your chances.

Lose weight
You said average, average male is probably around a BMI of 30, if not more. Start lifting weights and dropping lbs. Even if you have a body type that doesn’t put on muscle easily, the weight lifting will give you confidence. Get to around 25 BMI.

Go where women get drunk; it really impairs their decision-making.
Find a group of sober girls who are there without guys and give one of them a super cheesy pickup line. She’ll have some smart comeback and her friends will laugh. Act like you’ve been outsmarted and leave with a smile. Fast forward 3 or 4 drinks and one of those girls will stumble by and recognize you and try to put you down again. But now you have the advantage and she’ll be confused because you’re not a pushover now and she will remain engaged in talk trying to recover. Before you know it, you’re having a good time conversation with a drunk girl. If you don’t close the deal that night, don’t call her no matter what. If she calls you, tell her you’re busy. Don’t consider agreeing to do anything until the third or fourth call.

So work on your attractors. You make a nice salary. Do you have a good position? Do you have social capital? Are you a leader? Do you volunteer?
Do you work out? Do you read?
How’s your confidence? Are you a good conversationalist? Do you ask interesting questions? Are you well traveled?
Do you have a house? Nice car?
If you can improve on only some of these things you will naturally attract women as a side effect of your improvement.
