3 weeks ago the SO got our dogs tail caught in her car door somehow as she was closing it. We took her to the vet where they stitched her up and wrapped it. Last week we had our follow up and they told me it looks like we need to snip about an inch of her tail off. Problem is I already spent $400 the first time. Now they’re saying this one will cost $700. Her tail is still red and has some blackness around it but I don’t know if that’s infection or scab. Here are some pics and price of what they’re trying to charge. To me, it seems a bit outrageous to spend that much. What’s the worst that can happen if I do nothing? What would you suggest? Thanks.

And a pic of her before

Get a second opinion if cost is the concern...otherwise take care of your dog baw; he’d take care of you.

That’s why I’m here don’t know of a vet open right now and don’t have the time to go before her scheduled surgery.

Cute pup
My Boxer had her tail docked when I got her. She was under for a mass removal & they called & said her tail needed to be shortened, there was not enough skin left around the actual tail.
I don’t think they are doing it for a cosmetic reason, if they say it needs to be done I’d do it.

It could get worse and lose more tail. Or turn into a fatal system infection. Or it might heal on its own. There are sites where you can chat online with a vet. Might be worth a try.

I would get the surgery.

I’d get the surgery. Had to deal with an injury to one of my dogs a few months ago. Took her to the LSU Vet School for a second opinion. They agreed with the first diagnosis, but they also did the procedure for much cheaper.

She will be taken care of. I just don’t know if I’m being run around on the cost or not and I know there are some vets here.

Ask the very how much they charge to euthanize a dog. Tell the vet you will pay that amount and it is up to the vet which procedure to do.

Is there a vet school near where you are? I have a great vet in Baton Rouge that I bring my dogs to, and my SO just transferred her dog there as well. Granted, we've built a relationship with this vet that he's essentially a family friend now. We text him every now and then if it's an emergency, and even brought medical supplies to us when we couldn't get to him.

A family friend's dog got caught up in a dremel the groomer was using to trim her nails, she ended up with essentially a severe brush burn on her tail. The vet wanted to trim it, but they elected to wait a few days. Good thing they did, because blood flow came back to the tail and the dog kept it. It isn't as animated anymore, but it's there.

Ah another “ I think this vet cost is too much bc I have a preconceived notion that vets overcharge with no basis for this thought”.

my wife's college roomate became a vet, live in different cities, so we don't take out dogs there, but have asked for advice

She told me if you have to do surgery on dog its going to cost more than $500

Tough pill to swallow but you figure putting the dog under, surgery, associated medications... how much cheaper were you thinking it should be?

I was thinking around the same as the first one as they had to put her under then too. 700 just seemed a little much. I don’t know either way, obviously. But woulda been nice if they just did this the first go round I guess instead of charging 400 and they never said it was a chance that this would need to be done. Was a little blindsided with the follow up that we would need surgery.
