My brother has been talking about becoming a pilot. He has been in a totally different career and out of school for a while, but he's just about to get his undergrad degree. This has been an interesting thread that I'm going to have to point him to.

How long would it take him to work his way from having never flown a plane to piloting for a major?

That's just kicking the can down the road and not solving any issues with the pilot shortage.

I know guys that have done it in two years, would be hard to do that now, but that's what they said back then too have a friend that was hired right behind me with 400 hours, of course it's hard to rack up bulk flying time flying F-15s in peace time

ETA: motivation is the key, and the answer to a question he should be asking

This would need to be an ICAO change. Only reason 65 was so quick is the ICAO age limit was already 65.

I believe Japan has 70, but folks over 65 are restricted to Japanese airspace. A scheduling nightmare.

If he has the money, he could go to a flight school and go from 0 time to flight instructor in less than a year I think, maybe less.

As far as getting on with a major airline, that is impossible to estimate. All depends on where he goes to flight school, and what he does after. Some schools have agreements to place their grads with regional airlines.

Send him this link.

So you are saying that my brother, who is a salesman, could possibly play his cards right and be flying for Delta in two years?

AA and UAL have both started ab initio schools as a pipeline to regionals/flow through to try and mitigate the shortage crisis

not necessarily, what I'm saying that if you have career aspirations as an airline pilot, or in any field for that matter, the only limiting factor is the individual with the aspirations

No.

If he does, I should kill myself.

shouldn't be a part of one's vocabulary when trying to meet a goal

ETA: that mentality has kept a lot of potential players on the siidelines

A six page thread about an industry that’s soon going to be obsolete after the Green New Deal is passed? You all are wasting your time.

Emerald Coast is interview prep tailored to major airlines. You really don’t need it for a regional. They do a series of podcast type interview prep lessons as well as seminars around the country(they’re based in the FL panhandle) where they conduct face to face training and mock interviews. They will refund your money if you don’t get hired.

RST is knowledge prep study guides for airlines that have written type tests and cognitive tests.

Well I was just being realistic. Of course anything is possible, but highly unlikely.

Like saying, "777Tiger is going to reunite with my sister and save her from a life of poverty and living in a trailer, and get his brother-in-law a job with Delta."

Possible, but highly unlikely.

Hey, we've got at least 10 years until airplanes are outlawed in the US.
