the old lady's good about picking the tab up for stuff, went on a two week trip to Europe last year, everything was pre-planned and pre-paid by her, came home from a trip not long ago and noticed she'd had new tires put on the truck, she pays the annual fee for the boat slip, stuff like that

I have some married friends who not only split their accounts, but they keep their expenses completely separate as well.
He wouldn't (didn't?) even pay her car note when she was out of work with the baby.
Strange to me, but if it works for them, more power to them.

Never have one checking account. If you get hacked, you will be SOL. Spread the cash around.
I handle all the money. I yell at her to stop spending so much no matter the amount. She ignores me and spends what she wants. Ya know, textbook personal finance methods.

I was taught you have three accounts: his, hers and the family expenses. No reason in the world all the money has to be combined.

We sort of have 2 separate joint accounts. One is my primary, one is her primary. But we both have access to both.

We have 3, household, mine (hers) lol, and hers

We're not married, but we live together and have been a couple for over 5 years.
We each maintain our own bank accounts, but we also have a joint account. The joint is for bills, vacations, dinners out, etc. Our individual accounts are for things we buy for ourselves, surprises for one another, etc.
It works really well for us.

I think once me and the girl get married we will still maintain separate accounts and just have a joint account for the bills.
Over the years I’ve noticed my friends that keep separate finances seem to have much less reasons to disagree. Never have to justify why you want to spend money on a new driver or spend $100 at home goods.

One checking account. But the wife couldn’t even guess which bank we use with 3 tries.

We have a joint for mostly everything. I have a little account I put like $50 a week in just to buy little bullshite like beer or snacks, but it's transparent. She can see everything in it.

I’ve never understood that. If you’re married you share everything including money. It seems like it would create all sorts of tension

Probably wise to have seperate accounts these days. You never know when one might flip out, rob all the accounts, and run off.
Dey nuts like that.

Me and my wife do, I don’t have anything to hide other than my money that I don’t want her dumbass spending on stupid shite
She routinely barely has any money in her account while mine is fine, the lack of understanding shown towards the concept of budgeting is amazing

I’d off myself

The wife and I do. We both put in the same amount every month for the bills/mortgage and any money left over that month is rolled into our joint saving account for the house in case of emergencies or if we want to buy something for it. I have my own checking/savings account and she has her own accounts. It works well for us and she doesn't hear me bitching about her spending money on clothes and makeup and I don't have to listen to her when I spend money on fly fishing gear or stuff for my boat. When we go on trips or vacations, she pays for it on her CC and I just send her half of whatever it cost.
Win/Win

Yup, this. Going on almost ten years of marriage on this system, not one disagreement on her buying some designer cloths or me buying more (dumb to her) fishing and hunting stuff. When it comes to large purchases, we of course have to negotiate, but for day in and day out, easy breezy and no conflicts.
Big proponent of the his/hers/household account system.
