You should go through the Sheriff anyway. If it's a small town then the police may know the owners and/or worker.
If it's the sheriff then he's over an entire county and may not have a connection to these people.
But the best thing you can do is get a local attorney involved who knows or supported the sheriff and have him make that call to the sheriff for you.

The detective is wrong she is in possession of stolen property
I bet she went to do a mechanics lien and was notified that vin is stolen
The detective is lazy her loss is with the person that brought in the bike not you and she can’t lien it because it’s stolen
Like a pawn shop when they have stolen merchandise they eat the loss
I could be wrong I have before but I would chat with a lawyer

Thanks to those who recommended the sheriff’s office. I got a reply from them and currently am awaiting a call back.
It is already in a wrecker yard, the problem is that the wrecker yard that currently has it is the same one who did the work and wants their money, so there’s a conflict of interest. I’m hoping that the sheriff can have another company pick it up from this location and store it until I can make it out there.
Also in the process of getting a duplicate title as I can’t find the old one. This whole process is a shite show

What kind of bike we talking about? Year make model? It a may not be worth all this hassle if it's a 1999 Honda Rebel

Need to figure out how long they have had it since being turned into police. then get itemized billing of impound

This is more than likely what happened. They were trying to take possession and sell it, then found out it was stolen. Now they want to make their profit they were assuming

I was gonna say call the state police but looks like you reached someone. Looks like a good lawyer was recommended on pg 3. I'd consider that if they come up with some insane storage fee.

What city is it located in? Just curious!

I own a shop and I can say- BEYOND A SHADOW of doubt- this is not the way for them to handle it.
If we found we were in possession of stolen property, and the rightful owner came forward, we would likely deliver it for free to get it back where it belonged, and assist the police and owner in nailing the thief.
Shops and dealers that do stuff like this give everyone a bad name.

Where is the information on the person who dropped it off?
Posted on 1/17/21 at 6:42 pm to BruceJender
This situation is so backwoods Mississippi

I mean is it really that easy? Do they have no legal standing at all to fight me for that bill?
Whomever dropped it off was not the rightful owner, shop did no diligence and thats on them. Tell them sorry.
I would file a police report stating they stole my motorcycle and are trying to cover it up

So update is that I obtained the police report from BR that has my name and vin of the bike on it. I can’t locate the title (couldn’t get in state in time to expedite a duplicate), and tomorrow is the only day I have to pick it up. When I called the local police station to see if the police report was enough, they basically said “idk.” So what does the OT think my odds of success are?
I also called the lady back and when I told her I didn’t intend to pay the invoice, she said she was going to sell it and that I didn’t own the bike. Apparently she does when I informed her that possession of stolen property is a felony she didn’t have the same attitude.

You go there and get your bike and if they sell it you sue them until their dicks are in the dirt. Keep us updated.

The invoice has his name on it. After telling her if she’s concerned about the mechanics money to just sue him, she said she wasn’t sure if he was in jail or even existed I shite you not

Nice. So they messed up on the front end by doing work on a stolen bike and now they’re trying to stick you with the bill and holding your bike hostage.
Ballsy.
Ballsy.
