Did you by chance mention that you have an undergraduate degree from LA Tech and are working on a Masters from Southern University?

I took what I thought was my best offer since it was my highest offer to work at Chevron's Richmond refinery for 71K a year. That check was spread so thin I should have been on food stamps and in section 8 housing. It's all relative to your situation. They did pay for an MBA at Cal so it wasn't a total waste but I wouldn't do it again.

At my company you would probably come in as an engineer 2 with that background and start around 68k - 70k

Why? He has a physics degree and he spends all his time on Tigerdroppings gloating about going to southern. It's not like he has extra time to teach himself all the EE principles a person with a bachelor's degree would understand.

Not saying we'd hire him but a masters degree comes in as engineer 2 and I think their range is around the 65-68 area

With passed FE $50-60k starting is pretty typical in Northwest Arkansas for private sector jobs. About the same in Little Rock

A guy from my high school class recently got his first engineering job and he's making about $150k to start, plus a fat signing bonus.*

first off, you don't typically get to ask about starting pay on your first job....do your best in the interviews and, if you happen to be lucky enough to get multiple offers, take the one that is the highest. just use what recent grads from your school are getting as a guide, but be sure to adjust for cost of living variations.
fact is, on your first job you have no current job, so you don't have a heck of a lot of bargaining power....you can say "yes" or "no", but that is about it, really...

I felt like I had more money making 70k than I do now making very close to double that. It's easy to get your check spread thin with 401k, insurance, house note, kids, etc. Every tie I got a raise, it went to retirement and savings. But that didn't stop me from wanting a nicer house, better cars, etc. All of a sudden you feel broke (even though you're actually saving the money).
As far as what to expect salary wise, that's a ridiculous question. All depends on the industry and what you are doing. I know engineerst that start out in the low 40s and some that start out ear six figures. No way to know without researching the exact position.
