If they are offering a job, I would take it. You should then move jobs after 2-3 years and get the big pay bump.

I was offered an EE position for a Solar Design group in San Francisco, but I would have to had taken a pay cut larger than most engineer's starting salaries.

The VP is an LSU grad.

No thanks.

I would say that 9/10 people I've interacted with in my life have unrealistic expectations about everything.

I can't tell you how many guys I graduated with who were passing on 55k and 60k jobs thinking they should be making 80k minimum, only to remain unemployed for the next 1.5 years and then finally land with a 55k starting salary job.

I say take some pride and become fricking good at what you do. Graduating college doesn't make anyone worth shite these days.

I know engineerst that start out in the low 40s and some that start out ear six figures.

Would it be safe to assume that starting out at the lower end of the scale is mostly for the inexperienced (such as myself).

And for the record. I dont really try to rely on my privelege. I went to LA TECH first for a reason. I did not want to rely on the fact that I was black in order to succeed.

I got weeded out in the end, and I recognize that it happens to alot of people (some of whom were pretty smart cookies). In past few years I have rebounded back.

But I will admit... going to SU has shown me why LSU engineers dont really respect its engineering.

Yep

Too many young engineers skip on great learning experience for 5k more a year at a shite job.

Shop for experience and not pay early on. The pay will handle itself if you handle yourself.

Find some job listings for engineers with experience, specifically in the 3 to 5 year range. You'll quickly understand why your second job is when the money starts rolling in.

Your first job is just that, your first job. It's about getting experience and being able to live comfortably while doing so. It's not about driving Bugattis around.

That said there are some companies like Exxon that pay new engineering grads very well. Those companies are harder to get on with.

If you're looking to get on with a company and stay there for the long haul, then you need to move up through their engineer I-IV positions and move into senior level engineering or management. If that opportunity doesn't present itself and you feel like you aren't being adequately compensated in the 3-5 year experience range, then you move on. For now, that shouldn't be your concern.

I graduated from SU in Civil Engineering in 2000. I wanted to do Environmental Engineering so I took all my electives at LSU. I also had a full ride to LaTech. Don't let these fools that the majority of never stepped a foot on LSU's campus convince you that your degree is not as valuable as anyone else. You have to prove yourself when you get on the job. I have a lot of friends at both SU and LSU that have done well and others that haven't cut it.

Southerns engineering program is not respected at all in the circles that matter. The fact that so many have real issues passing the FE doesn't help. It really is a subpar program.

As far as Civil grads go, it's amazing how many smarties from aTm, Rice, etc. are now available. And, in my field starting salaries for recent grads are no where near that guy someone always knows.

I am right near the top of the food chain in my firm so I consider myself relatively knowledgeable of the market.

You sound like a fine young man who is able to keep his composure even when being viciously attacked by strangers on a message board. As a result I would like to offer you $121k per annum to engineer deez nuts.

What certifications do you have? That's the first follow-on question.

The second is what job experience do you have in the field of choice?

Spot on.

Worry less about starting pay as long as it is reasonable and some benefits are there. What you REALLY want to do is to find a company that will provide an opportunity for you to grow your skillset and challenge you. Many new engineers think about changing jobs to get that bump in 2-4 years... go interview... and find out that they really have one year of experience several times over.

Wait till he figures out how much more the guys that don't have a master's degree from a fine engineering school but do have two years of marketable experience are making.

You don't ask for anything, they offer you a position...maybe. If you get multiple offers then you have a choice and some leverage, otherwise be happy with the job and DON'T SUCK AT IT.
