TR 3 thyroid nodules are almost always benign. You should not worry about it at all ever. I’m a radiologist. I read thyroid ultrasounds and biopsy thyroid nodules. You never need to worry about it.

Pathologist here. Depending on your doc, for TR3, he may advise surveillance (watchful waiting) or a lobectomy (not lobotomy), taking half the gland and leaving other half so u won't need med.

Likely not cancerous.
But if it is, thyroids use iodine. They we put you on an iodine deprived diet then give you a radioactive iodine pill to target the tumor.

Both mom and sister have had their thyroid removed and take a hormone pill every morning usually right after they get up. Mom just about can’t function without hers but sister is not that bad being able to go a couple of days without before she struggles.
It’s a process to get the dosage right for each patient. They go back and forth higher/lower till YOU the patient tell them you are feeling normal again with the right amount of energy and notice changes back to normal hair and fingernails and skin.
It’s important for you to really participate and help with the proper dosage process. Over the years there will be times of temporary shortages that delay refills and you will benefit greatly from being like Sis and not like mom who can’t miss a day without mentally and physically collapsing.

I’ve read thousands of thyroid ultrasounds and performed fine needle aspirations on hundreds of thyroid nodules. Nothing in life is certain but there is a greater than 99% chance his nodule is benign based on the given description. A lot of physicians are afraid to commit and patients end up with unnecessary follow ups (which cost money) and unnecessary procedures (which can have complications). I prefer to use my expertise and experience to give patients the best advice I can and then I stand by it.
For anyone curious, just google “TI-RADS radiology” and study the different categories of thyroid nodules and the recommendations. You can also read about the chances of cancer, etc.

ChatGPT says you will live......
quote:
Based on the information provided, your thyroid nodule and minor lymphadenopathy are not immediately dangerous or deadly:
Level 3 Thyroid Nodule (TI-RADS 3): This classification indicates a low to moderate risk of malignancy, with an estimated 2-5% chance that the nodule could be cancerous. This is considered a relatively low risk, and most level 3 nodules are benign. Your doctor may recommend monitoring with periodic ultrasounds to track any changes in size or appearance, and a biopsy might be suggested if the nodule shows concerning changes over time.
Minor Lymphadenopathy: The lymph nodes are slightly enlarged but non-pathological, meaning they don’t show signs of cancer or other severe conditions. A 9mm size in the short axis is generally within normal limits and often considered benign. This could be due to a minor infection, inflammation, or other benign causes.
Overall Assessment: Neither condition is currently classified as dangerous or deadly. However, the key is ongoing monitoring and follow-up with your doctor to ensure that any changes are detected early. Your doctor will guide you on any additional steps needed to keep these conditions under control.

If they are concerned, they will order a needle biopsy to make sure. I had that and started getting checked out with ultra sound every 6 months and now the check is annually. Keeping the check up appointments for ultra sound are important.

Wife (no pics) is a head and neck surgeon. She said it doesn't sound super concerning.
What size is the nodule?

If they were really concerned about the radiology report they wouldn't have put it on your portal.

Pretty sure thyroid cancer is one of the easiest cancers to treat and has an extremely good prognosis if by some chance that's what it is. The thyroid is removed and you take a medication for the rest of your life.
Relax either way.
