I will never not hire professional movers.

They are insured, they are probably 10x more efficient in terms of time and packing the truck etc. Protection if my shite gets damaged.

It took professional movers 3 hours to load every box and piece of furniture, drive to the new house, unload and set everything up. If I called a couple buddies to do that in exchange for beer and a meal it would have probably taken a couple days to get all that shite.

Also I fricking hate moving so I would never ask someone to volunteer for that bullshite.

When we moved, I hired a crew to move all the big stuff.. Bed, furniture etc... Guys did an awesome job.. Moved four bedrooms of beds, dressers, chest of draws and entertainment centers to upstairs bedrooms. Didn't put one hole in sheet rock and didn't scratch or break anything. Tipped those guys with an extra $125 and pizza..

Friends helped move boxes and small stuff...

I dont mind helping people move - it's not that big of a deal as long as they have crap packed up and ready to roll. The worst part is showing up at someone's place and they still have shite in the drawers not packed and have to take 20-30 minutes between loading furniture.

Have that shite ready to go and I'll take that case of beer off your hands.

I second all of this.

quit inconveniencing friends and family

you know another part of being an established adult? Being mature enough to tell someone no.

"hey man, wanna help me move this weekend?"
"nah sorry man not really, good luck to you"

Now you are no longer inconvenienced. Sorry you didn't have the spine to do the above and are now helping someone move this weekend.

Sorry you’re too poor to hire movers

I think I would need to make $1M/year before I decided it was ok to be lazy enough to hire movers. To each their own though.

Hiring movers isn't even that expensive.

You know you can always say no when someone asks, right?

I'm a big believer in the whole "'No' is a complete sentence" notion as well, but let's not pretend our society hasn't conditioned people feel afraid to say no without a legitimate excuse and apology.

The execution of that philosophy isn't always seamless, depending on the person you're dealing with. Especially for us women. I could easily see friends thinking I'm a bitch if they asked me for a favor and I said no without some kind of apology/excuse. When realistically, people get paid to do that and I have every right to say no to doing it for free.

’d rather chip in to pay for a friend to hire movers than help move. I loathe moving.
I moved just a couple weeks ago. Had planned hiring to move, but my FIL and another friend told me save my money and they'd help. My FIL, BIL, and I got everything done (the big stuff needing a trailer) in one morning before the other friend even had a chance to show. Still fed them all and we got unpacked pretty quickly, too. Funny how things work out when you have friends and are likable.

Well I actually love my friends and family so I don't mind doing it. You get everyone down to do it takes no time and you have fun with the camaraderie. You should be better.

Exactly.

I have about 6 friends who I'd help move. There are 4 trucks between us and multiple trailers. These are all friends I've had since HS and they all still live ~50 minutes from me in Lakeland.

Now if a relatively new friend I had in Saint Pete asked me to help them move, I'd immediately come up with an excuse

So someone who hires movers has/is neither of these?

Tomorrows thread:
What's trashier as a grownup asking friends to help you move or asking friends to donate to a gofundme to help you hire professional movers.

As a grown-up who is moving in a couple of months, I am going to hire our maid to help me and my wife box up things for a week. Going to buy new boxes, yes I know you can get them for free at the back of grocery stores, then hire professional movers to move us. The wife and I will probably send them a drawing where everything goes in the new house and put post it notes on both places so it all lines up. I will spend my time hanging art and pictures and blinds and window treatments. I don't want to move my own shite why should I ask a friend to help me haul stuff.

That first time you hire movers is a glorious experience and one you can never go back from.

The last time I moved, since work paid for it, it included packing services. That’s another game changer.

And hell no I’m not helping people move.

I pay movers so I don't have to lift heavy shite.

Inconveniencing my friends is not even part of the decision.

I've helped my mom move at least 7 times. Never does it get easier, and never do I say no. If you're family or at least close long time friends, help them out. They just better find a way to return the favor. For example, I have a friend who will be buying a new house pretty soon. I got him to pay it forward by helping me lay 3 pallets of sod. Now I owe him a move. Pretty simple.
