I've helped my mom move at least 7 times. Never does it get easier, and never do I say no. If you're family or at least close long time friends, help them out. They just better find a way to return the favor. For example, I have a friend who will be buying a new house pretty soon. I got him to pay it forward by helping me lay 3 pallets of sod. Now I owe him a move. My brother helped me move last time, I returned the favor to him. Pretty simple.

They obviously think highly of you to ask you to help them...I would never ask anyone to help me move something, airport ride etc unless they were basically a brother to me. Take it as a compliment.

Wrong. I've helped buddies move several times since college and they have returned the favor. Kind of a fun tradition with two of my buddies. Each time one of us moves, we bust arse, get in a good workout moving everything, then get a pizza, then go out and get hammered. Kind of marks a point of change each time we move, so we get together bust arse, get ripped and have fun catching up, reminiscing, etc.

One time two of my buddies came down to south Florida to help me move from Atl. Packed up all the shite in a truck, went out all night after and got shitfaced. Then slept off the hangover on some air mattresses in my newly empty place. Good times had by all. Then went out and repeated the next night, sans the moving stuff. And of course drinks were on me.

I'll always help if asked (if that shite is already packed and its local).

That being said, I would never ask any of my friends to do the same for me.

We don't ask people to help us move for that exact reason. I move my own shite. I don't owe people shite and I have a bad back.

I hurt my back helping a buddy pack after he just got a job with a major company. After loading his gun safe and piano in the sweltering heat, he told me that he was given a moving package that was worth thousands and was pocketing the money. He had a small army of people helping him not just move, but pack, over the course of a few days.

Note to anyone moving and asking friends for help: Your friends are probably happy to help, but there is some information you do not need to divulge

Mostly moved family...Two sisters (no pics) I called "the nomads". Three brothers (actually 4 brothers) moved a few times. So when it came time for me to move..not one helped me. My Dad gave me two pieces of furniture and a sister was only there to complain that I was getting furniture from my Dad. As far as friends...LOL yeah right.

All of my friends would laugh if I asked them to help me move just like I’d laugh at them if they asked

All of my friends (to my knowledge) can easily afford a professional moving company, and I can certainly afford beer. It would be suuuuuper awkward for them to ask and I probably wouldn't feel bad not helping.

That being said, if someone lost their job and was moving to a more modest home or was getting a divorce or something like that, I'd gladly pitch in as best I could.

In that situation I’d probably pay for the movers

I dont mind helping people move - it's not that big of a deal as long as they have crap packed up and ready to roll.

This/\.

Don't have me show up at your house and dishes are still in the cabinets, books still on shelves, entertainment center still plugged in with stereo, surround sound, DVD player, game console, etc.

Have that shite packed and ready to roll or you're going to lose me fast.

Making money? Older than 24 or so? Pay movers to move your crap and quit inconveniencing friends and family in order to save a few bucks.

Quit being a keyboard warrior, grow a set, and tell people no IRL if you don't want to help. And quit trying to tell adults what they should do.

I had the help of one friend in all my times of moving. That was recently and he actually offered when I told him I was moving. I told him I could use his help but he didn’t have to if he didn’t want to. However, my brother has helped me when he’s lived in town and I’ve helped him move several hours away. We are both healthy individuals but I imagine if any of use move in the future we will hire someone. We aren’t young bucks anymore.

Now, I’ve helped tons of people move when I was in college and shortly thereafter. I feel like I was a professional mover at that time. I had a buddy ask me a year or so ago about moving. He has asked all of our friends and they all agreed to help around one of two weekends in a month or so.

I told him I wasn’t committing to anything because I might be busy. This guy says he’ll make sure it’s not a day I’m busy and that I’m definitely helping him. I told him I really don’t want to spend one of my days off during the heat of the summer moving his stuff. Come to find out when the day came to move, they didn’t have most the shite packed up and the girls that said they’d help just sat around and talked while one person did the majority of the work. That person called me and said it was a horrible experience and didn’t give a shite about the beer and pizza purchased for them after they moved all the stuff.

I told him, now you know why I said NO!

I've helped my close friends and in return they help me. I'll get small stuff packed up and move it myself and just ask for help moving the few large pieces of furniture. It's not much and i always provide beer afterwards
