Once again we are asking why people don’t have flood insurance.

All those folks in the coastal plain of the Carolinas with no flood insurance. Saw an estimate of 70% of people without it. And the area went through a flood event as recently as 2015.

“I’ve never flooded” is niot a good excuse.

I won't lie, I don't have it. I need to get it again. It lapsed and I just keep pushing it off. I live on a hill though and through all of Harvey, didn't remotely have water close to me. But also realize a few clogged drains can mean disaster. I have enough cash saved to re-do my house though, so it's not like I'll be begging FEMA to save me either.

You should probably still get the insurance just in case all that pussy you're drowning in becomes an issue.

Congress should step in and make it a requirement of all federally backed mortgages since taxpayers are the ones who eat the loss on all the houses that go into foreclosure because the owner didnt have flood insurance and the owner can’t afford repairs on their own

My parents don't and they live on an island.

Their thing is they're 15 feet above sea level so according to flood maps, it's almost impossible for them to ever get flooding, even with a direct hurricane strike.

My main worry is they have hundreds of trees in their yard. Storms there are terrifying because you feel large branches falling on the house every few seconds.

Then you need to look at the numbers and see if you really need it. You can self insure and not have to pay premiums for something you'll likely never use.

You seem some of these places?

Paying for clothing looks like a stretch, much less flood insurance

That's right.

Eastern NC and northeast SC aren't exactly the most prosperous places out there.

I have a vacation house at St Augustine beach. I do have flood insurance on it. It’s expensive and goes up every year. My total insurance on that home is now over $4000 a year. Keep in mind, this place is small. I can understand why people don’t buy it simply because the cost is so high. I’ve debated canceling it myself.

It's some of the poorest areas of the country and Scrooge McDuck thinks everyone should be paying the government to live there!

It already is, if you are in a FEMA determined flood plain.

Has absolutely nothing to do with flood insurance.

You could probably make this argument about the NFIP.

People who flood will complain they didn't have enough money for flood insurance.

Then you'll have a certain group of Congress call for government sponsored flood insurance. Every citizen has a right to flood insurance!

Sound familiar?

I thought it was? I technically live in a flood zone and was required to pay flood insurance even though it hasn't flooded in the area in over 40 years.
