That's why they call it a 100 year flood plain. You buy extremely overpriced insurance that has a ton of outs in it to insure your risk of a catastrophic flood occurring sometime in the next 100 years.
Lulz if you think flood insurance in a flood zone is overpriced.
If anything it's far below marker rates.

Their thing is they're 15 feet above sea level so according to flood maps, it's almost impossible for them to ever get flooding, even with a direct hurricane stri
I am 600 feet above sea level and still have it. Sea level has nothing to do with it really. It is all about the flood plain.

I have enough cash saved to re-do my house though, so it's not like I'll be begging FEMA to save me either.
Well if you have enough in savings then I don't see why you'd need insurance. Just make sure you understand just how much it would cost all things considered. In your situation, paying for insurance would effectively be making a gambling bet that your house will flood at some point. Take the money that you would be spending on a premium and put that away with your savings and you'll be golden.

He said they are on an island so I'd guess the water would just run back into the ocean. This all depends on how far inland their home is though. Doesn't take to for inland and water will start to stack up regardless of being on an island.

“I’ve never flooded” is not a good excuse.
This, because land and draining changes because of new development. Filling in low areas like we do here in EBR just sends to water some place else, so houses who may have never, ever, flooded may ultimately find themselves inundated.

Yay! More legislature!
It’s not really legislation if the govt is already backing the loan. Along the same lines of a bank requiring you to have full coverage on a vehicle they’re financing.

over $4000 a year.
About how much is that a month, in ballpark figures?
