The responses in this thread are pathetic. And a shining example of the ignorance and attitude that casts a dark shadow over American society today

Why would we? Honestly, we need a string Japan as a counterweight to China. The 1940s were a long time ago.

I think everyone is aware, but it's still sad it had to be done. Hopefully we never see a conflict of that magnitude again. Never a good thing when innocent civilians have to die to prove a point.

I doubt we see anything of that exponential display of power again unless provoked in a "trapped in a corner" type of scenario.

Most war is waged digitally via Economy/Coms.

Plus, next gen warfare will feature an insane amount of robotic capability that quite frankly I hope to never see.

Listen to the Hardcore History about this. Carlin does a good job describing it, and convinced me that fire bombing like this was worse than the A bombs for people on the ground.

They had it coming.

BTW, you know how we know we were justified eventually dropping that bomb on Hiroshima?

Because they didn't capitulate after the carpet bombing of Tokyo.

Know how we know we were justified eventually dropping that bomb on Nagasaki?

Because they didn't capitulate after we dropped the one on Hiroshima.

Tokyo was gonna get it again ... then Kokuro and so on. We had 12 really big bombs lined up ready to go.

And really didn’t even want to quit after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That’s why we had to be go to such extreme measures against Japan. War could have gone on for a lot longer than it did over there. They were all willing to die for their country and would have kept fighting until everyone was dead and nothing was left

A B-29 had a maximum payload of over 3 times the size of the B-17. Of course, bombing capacity decreased as fuel load increased, but the B-29 was a much larger aircraft than the B-17.

I assume you are aware of this.

Yes. The civilian population were preparing to fight to the death. It saved American lives. It doesnt make the burning death of thousands of men, women, and children any less horrific. Remember yes... Honor the bravery of the pilots..yes... celebrate the carnage...no

I don't celebrate one death. I celebrate winning a war the USA did not start.

Be careful not to get your cape stuck in the door of your Tercel, fricking hero.

After the atomic bombings, Curtis Lemay was asked how he felt about killing (whatever the accepted death toll was at the time. I think it was 50,000.) in one day. He replied, "I've been killing 100,000 a night since March. I feel fine."

Curtis Lemay was a bad mother fricker.

Common myth, the overwhelming majority of federal debt is held by Americans Investors

“Some 70% of the national debt is owned by domestic government, institutions investors and the Federal Reserve. A shade under 30% is owned by foreign entities, according to the latest information from the U.S. Treasury.Aug 23, 2018”

The military didn’t want to quit, but the civilians were quite literally starving and burning to death. America took air and naval superiority over the pacific and even the seas around japan. We sunk every boat that was not allied. We could have eventually starved them out, but it would have made the war last even longer. Invasion would have cost millions of American lives.

I hope to God almighty we never see war like was fought in the East in WWII ever again. Why? Because the brutality and total fighting to the death nature of the war justified use of atomic weapons.

Think of that for a minute. Atomic weapons were more humane than the other options. I hope we never see that again.

The scale of some of these bomber raids is hard for me to understand. 279 is realtively small when compared to some in Europe, but still crazy to think about. Imagine seeing 279 Cessnas flying overhead at once and thenk think what that must have looked like.

I believe it has something to do with the post war treaty we had with Japan. To not teach Americans what Japan did and the history of the war with them so that country would not be viewed negatively.
