Felony murder statute has entered the chat.

Most of these scams originate overseas and this one may too. The Uber driver was a cutout and she may have been delivering it to another cutout. She may have even been instructed to drop it off at a vacant lot and the scammer or someone working for him would pick it up later.

Presumably they can trace the Uber account. It will probably go back to some internet cafe in Mumbai. Maybe they'll catch the stateside accomplice but he'll claim he was an innocent dupe too.

He shot her several times, because he thought she was a scammer?

No. The scam was someone calling him and threatening to kill him and his family if he didn’t pay some ransom. The Uber driver was also tricked into showing up at the house. It’s like his was some sort of sick prank.

He thought she was working with whoever called and threatened him.

I’m not making excuses for him, but has the family said anything about the mental status of someone that’s 81? I know it’s opening a can of worms but if someone that’s 81 is showing any signs of mental decline, having access to a gun isn’t the best thing.

LINK

this link shows some video and explains more about the situation.

he says they claimed to have a relative of his in jail and wanted money to get him out? that they demanded money for bail. so he couldn't take the time to first verify who the relative was and if they were actually in jail. also, that's not how jail works. they don't threaten you.

what a fricking dumbass. this pisses me off immensely. none of it was necessary. she was retreating from him and trying to explain who she was. he even said, "the guy on the phone was threatening me." this is an older woman.

then the way he calmly talks about how he shot her is also disturbing. seriously screw his ignorant frick.

ahhhhhhhhhhh

they said it traced back to canada and is likely a burner/fake number.

I felt so bad for that lady when I saw the video. Old man clearly can see she was not a threat and shot her multiple times.

My grandma was always on high alert for scammers. She thought everything was a scam. Then one day she got a call that said she needed to give them all of her info so they could stop bad people from getting her money. My uncle went over to check on her and she had stuffed her checkbook, drivers license credit cards, ect into an envelope and was getting ready to mail it to the scammers.

It was then we really understood that dementia had taken over her. Of course we still had to cancel everything because we didn't know what she had told the scammers on the phone.

I just don’t get what exactly would cause the old man to decide shooting and older woman seeming necessary.

right? he claims the scammer threatened his family. so if they were truly a bad person who actually had his family then how does killing this woman picking up the money help his alleged family member?

he already admitted to speaking to a man on the phone, so it wasn't this lady. even if she had been working with him, which she wasn't. how does killing her solve anything? if the scammer was real then wouldn't shooting his accomplice further make things much worse?

there is no justifying his actions. i'm sickened that someone can just end a life like this. the woman was retreating.

not only was she retreating she was hobbled. i don't know if that was after he already shot her in the leg or what, but she was slowly moving.

I'd be willing to bet this is the case. He's probably not all there mentally anymore and the scam call had him on edge and then this strange lady he didn't know shows up which caused him to shoot her

This legit breaks my heart. Old lady just trying to make ends meet gets killed for no reason. That guy was very eager to shoot her, she posed no threat. He’s obviously an idiot or isn’t all there. Watching the video is crazy like why did he shoot her? So sad. The world is a scary place. Hug your loved ones, life can happen to any of us.

I am just shocked that Uber is now a package delivery service. That sounds like it would be fraught with all kinds of legal issues.

Would you be surprised if I told you they ran a multi-billion dollar freight logistics service?

I use a pickup service called Roadie all the time. It's awesome.

I once had an open box TV from BestBuy delivered from an hour away for a decent price. They picked it up in another city and delivered it to me. when I didn't have a truck to haul it in.

Open box TVs like that are not deliverable and pickup only through BestBuy, so I still saved a lot of money by paying for a pickup service like this.

I think it's interesting Uber now offers pickup services. Might use that sometime.

What a shame. Scammers preying on the elderly is an awful thing.

Young or old, I don't understand shooting someone who is no threat to you.
