The article is BS. I work for Ochsner and am at work right now. I know multiple nurses who were at work who got laid off while at work with patients under their care.

I know a nursing director who is having to be over more units now, so I'm assuming that means there were some director level nurses that were let go, as well.

Actual bedside nurses or nurse managers?

They are struggling to hire nurses so firing bedside nurses makes no sense

The cuts will not affect doctors, nurses and other patient-facing staff, according to Ochsner CEO Pete November. Employees in management, administrative jobs and clerical positions will see the bulk of the cuts, which will be spread evenly across the institution’s facilities in both states.

If they can part with 770 people that don't interact with patients at all....Oschsner is a lot bigger than I thought. Or perhaps just incredibly bloated.

They've taken a nose dive in patient satisfaction lately.

I have a very hard time believing Ochsner is firing nurses that are patient facing during the work day while they are with patients

Everyone i'm hearing from the Lafayette hospitals are directors and managers -- some fairly high up as well. Sounds like a bunch of departments are about to get crammed together and one person will be asked to manager the new one in a role that was formerly occupied by 2-3 people

This is caused by a couple things. Mostly it’s cost of employees. To be specific, the travel nurse phenomenon caused by Covid policies. The federal government reimbursed hospitals for some of the costs associated with bringing travel nurses in to their hospitals during a time of crisis. While everyone knew that this was a temporary situation, the market adjusted for it and all nurses salaries increased, though not nearly as much. The result is that hospital systems now have a higher cost of providing professional services to their patients. An additional factor is the same thing that affects all of us when we go to the store. Inflation. Hospital supply chains are a monster, and subject to the same market forces that other goods are. This also drives the cost of services up. While those factors have increased the cost of doing business considerably, payment from insurers for services have not increased to keep up. There’s your deficit. Hospital systems make money by treating people. That’s their revenue stream (with some random revenue generated by other ways, but it’s driven by patient care and billable codes). So they can’t really cut clinical staff because that’s going to decrease the revenue. They have to look to other areas to cut. So what I suspect we will learn is that some of the cuts are administrative type positions and some of them are the “nice to have for your patients but not required clinically or from a regulatory standpoint.

This is the smartest comment in this thread so far… amongst many ignorant ones

We had cuts with higher management recently where I work here in NC. Based on their titles, it was probably a complete waste of $.

You can have a hard time believing it all you want. But it happened. It’s been a very shitty day for those of us who thought our jobs were secure, only to find out they most definitely are not.

They are firing clinicians, people who actually work with patients. Just got a message from someone I know whose supervisor was dismissed. She held her in high regard and her patients love her. They got a shitty email at 6 am stating if your job was on the line, they’d reassign you and no clinician would lose their job. They lied. And you can’t “reassign” if cutting.

I bet the fat asses who are useless kept their jobs. F Ochsner. I hope it goes bankrupt one day and its investors fall, also.

80% of what they do is because of government regulations and third party payer systems.

Do explain how a non profit would have investors.
