Got diagnosed with ocd yesterday, anybody else deal with this and have found effective treatments/ways to cope? The intrusive thoughts are crushing me right now.

Do you think that it’s related to your anxiety?

I saw you also posted about this in the Health/Fitness Board. The best thing you can start doing for your anxiety is getting regular exercise. It sounds like you’re seeing someone already. Keep that up, too.

The most important part is know and accept you are going to be okay.

Medication does help, but that only treats the symptom. The root cause is something that a licensed counselor or therapist can help you process behavioral, emotional, and situational factors that drive the struggle.

Regain your power by letting go.

Ending your habit of worrying will create of the most significant positive changes in your life.

Worrying doesn't prevent the inevitable.

Gratitude, joy, or pride in someone are healthy substitutes for apprehension. The former, for instance, releases dopamine that contributes to your happiness.

Overcoming fear enables you to enjoy life to the fullest.

Fear will make you miss out on things that you should enjoy, leaving you miserable. Create an anchor thought to beat it. It distracts your mind, and replaces the feeling of fear with beautiful images.

I started taking Zoloft a while back and really helped with that. Knew I had anxiety, but never really realized it was OCD until after I started taking it. Definitely recommend medication as a stating point. Really helps.

OCD is horrible. The thing that really helps is a type of behavior therapy called ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention). You gently face the thoughts that cause anxiety and that feeling of loss of control without doing the compulsions so your brain learns it’s safe. It works so well for so many of us.

Little things you can try today:

• When the obsession hits, just say “that’s my OCD talking” and breathe through the anxiety instead of doing the ritual.

• Move your body, get good sleep, ease up on caffeine.

• Skip the reassurance-seeking or googling — it only feeds the cycle.

• Try quick grounding breaths when it spikes.
Three rapid deep breaths and one long exhale.

Please reach out to a therapist who specializes in OCD (IOCDF.org is great for finding someone). Meds can help too if you need them.

I wish you luck. It can be debilitating but it can also be overcome.

I agree. It's a "booster" to help start. And starting is the hardest part.

Taking medication and working with a licensed professional is the real one-two punch.

And finding a counselor that you like, trust, and can relate with is important. Keep going until you do, and then stick with it. I've been with mine for almost 6 years.

He has been one of life's greatest blessing to me.

I suffered with OCD -intrusive thoughts.
I’m on 20 mg of Prozac and it’s helped tremendously.

There’s nothing wrong with ensuring your doors are locked and your hands are clean, it’s not like you’re killing people. If we all took drugs to be “normal” the world would be boring.

I'm sorry you're suffering. I've had the same diagnosis for 20 something years.

I was socially awkward when I was younger. As in people would talk to me and I'd freeze up because I didn't know what to say. It was very embarrassing. So I created the habit of running narratives in my head of how to react to specific situations. That worked great, but the narratives started to change from how to react to reliving how I'd been hurt by people I care about. These turned into he intrusive thoughts that are a fricking nightmare and drain the joy out of everting. Meds and therapy have helped a ton. Find a therapist who specializes in OCD. Every other counselor I've had treated me like a joke because I couldn't get over past issues. As if I enjoyed torturing myself every day.

If you want to talk it out, reach out to me at tdrexferal@yahoo.com

I appreciate all the responses, i always thought it was just anxiety but after talking with my psych yesterday she said it's classic ocd. It has manifested itself differently over the years with things like health, fear of job loss, money even though all those things were good.

This most recent one is the strangest though and honestly it prob stems from the ot lol. I have been teaching for almost 25 years and never had a remotely inappropriate interreaction with a student. However, lately when i see on here something about a teacher and a student i somehow insert myself into the position and fear I'm going to end up the teacher on the news. I'll go back to like looking at porn or trying to cyber girls in high school and it's like I'm still doing those things now when i haven't done either in over two decades.

First and foremost, that discussion will be most beneficial from the person who diagnosed and is treating the condition. What is the treatment plan? Meds? Meds and therapy? Therapy and no meds?

If it was diagnosed by say a PCP, did they refer you to a specific Psychologist or therapist?

One thing I would definitely keep in line is the medication interaction, especially as it relates to other OTC and prescription medications you are on and as you age, that even becomes more important.

That is where your PCP comes in. If you don't have one, get one, get established, see them at least annually, do med reconciliations on every visit, make sure your wife, family or caregivers know what youre taking, frequency, dosage or at least has access to where it's "stored" (MyChart, etc).

Severity and frequency of symptoms can vary and therapy will / should help identify those triggers, how to work through and how to eventually prevent.
