I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist. She prescribed zoloft, propanal, and trazadone. I was really disappointed because the last two were supposed to help with sleep but i slept horribly last night.

Depending on the severity of the diagnoses, the Psych may be best to handle the interactions so make sure they know EVERYTHING you're taking. That being said, I would still reach out to your PCP and let them know as well and update them with the new meds as they may be very comfortable handling it as well. The PCP absolutely has a role monitoring physical metrics like blood pressure, weight, or blood sugar that may be affected by psychiatric drugs. It's a picture that gets alot of input but needs one artist that can't be you.
Combining Zoloft, propranolol, and trazodone requires close medical supervision due to risks of serotonin syndrome (from Zoloft + trazodone) and enhanced sedation or low blood pressure (from trazodone + propranolol). These medication combination definitely, absolutely warrants monitoring for side effects.

If you round up at the pump to an even dollar amount, no matter how many quick trigger pulls it takes., You probably have OCD.

Sorry you have to deal with this one -- it's a bear. Been dealing with it all my life. Got a diagnosis last year. Before that, it was treated as standard anxiety/depression. My former PCP put me on a bunch of scripts that didn't work, made me feel different versions of awful, and kept me up at night. Then he put me on sleeping pills. I spent several months working my way off of all that stuff.
Tried to deal with it myself again and got back into a really bad place. Then, luckily, I found a therapist who specialized in OCD. I had no idea it was even a legit mental health disorder LOL.
Talk therapy has helped a lot. I've been resistant to it because I'm a cranky old GenXer and thought it was a bunch of pity party BS where you blame your parents for your shortcomings. But that is not the case with a good therapist. They just help you see what you can't see and give you a vocabulary to deal with it. Mine has also shared several techniques & strategies for actively dealing with intrusive thought patterns, some of them already shared in this thread, and that has been hugely helpful.
In addition to talk therapy, strenuous exercise and meditation have helped me tremendously.
I'm not anti-med, and i may need to add them back into the mix at some point. But as others have said, the meds should be part of the plan...not the whole plan.
There's no silver bullet for OCD, but it does get better. Therapy, meditation, and exercise have really helped me turn the volume down on the intrusive thoughts.
Take care.

manifested itself differently
I remember the first time I met with my counselor who specializes in OCD. I spent 10 minutes talking and then he started telling me things about myself as if he had been living in my head. It doesn't matter what the compulsion is, OCD does the same thing over and over again. I tell my wife it's like I'm stuck in Groundhog Day waking up to the same joy stealing thoughts over and over again.
Good luck. That sucks that your compulsion is tied to your work. That must be very scary.
The hardest part for me was learning to live with the thoughts. They're never going to go away. I have to set up processes to limit when I fall down rabbit hole. And when I do, learn to live with the thoughts while not giving any power to them.

How long have you been taking them? These meds usually take a bit to work well and for your body to adjust to them

Yesterday was the first time and i know the zoloft takes time but i thought the trazadone and propanol were for more immediate relief

Propanol is actually known to prevent sleep…..
It’s great at reducing the symptoms of anxiety (high BP, elevated heart rate), but for whatever reason it is known for keeping you from sleeping. Doesn’t make sense but it be what it be
But make no mistake proponal is great. A lot of people think it should be a prophylactic that everyone takes. It’s banned in most pro sports because it can keep your nerves down in the most tense situation and it has no neurological effects so your all there

I've been taking naltrexone to help with invasive thoughts. It's usually prescribed to help people limit their cravings for drugs and alcohol, but my psych found it useful in helping me slow down giving into intrusive thoughts. Overall, it slows me down when I get an impulsive thought and gives me time to think about whether I want to do it or not.
I also tried ketamine treatments for over a year. I'd heard it helped a lot of people, but it didn't do anything for me.

OCD has a million different levels of severity. Some people find it helpful in creating structure for their job and private life. I have only known 3 people that had it almost to an almost debilitating level.
For you, I hope yours is low level. That brings success when harnessed and aimed correctly.

I don't know if this is common but mine is intermittent. I'll go weeks, months, even years and be totally fine. But when it hits it hits hard. Is that true for most of you or is it more steady?
Posted on 4/23/26 at 10:26 am to RandySavage
I have cdo. It’s like ocd but the letters are in the correct order.

Two decades ago you were "cybering" girls in high school?
What does that mean?

This most recent one is the strangest though and honestly it prob stems from the ot lol. I have been teaching for almost 25 years and never had a remotely inappropriate interreaction with a student. However, lately when i see on here something about a teacher and a student i somehow insert myself into the position and fear I'm going to end up the teacher on the news. I'll go back to like looking at porn or trying to cyber girls in high school and it's like I'm still doing those things now when i haven't done either in over two decades.
yep, classic intrusive thinking.

I would not be an expert and would not know. have low level in my immediate family and have worked with a few. I think you are doing the correct thing in seeking help to smooth your path.
