The "Blue Zone" on Okinawa is an interesting phenomena to read about. More centenarians per Capita than anywhere in the world. By a large margin.

OP is correct. Just as it was the last time I went 20 years ago.
And I've been to Tokyo often and small towns far removed from the big cities.
There's definitely some small town charm there, too.
Even in towns not far from Tokyo/ Yokohama, like Enoshima.
I disagree that Japanese don't like Americans, however they are a proud country and don't really care for other Japanese may do something like marry a non Japanese.

When i smoked years ago, I flipped a cigarette butt on the sidewalk in Tokyo and before it stopped rolling a stranger walked up scolding me and pointed at the cigarette butt. I picked it up and started noticing how clean everything was. No paper wrappers, no cigarette buts, no trash anywhere to be seen.

The taxi drivers are kamikazes and take pride in scaring the living crap out of Americans who ride with them. I had white knuckles every time I got out of one while the drivers chuckled.

The shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Osaka is an awesome ride.

The trains are never ever late.

Good luck. You can’t just move to Japan. It is very hard to get citizenship or even residency and that is on purpose.

Japan doesn’t want foreigners living there permanently.

They use the phrase foreigner. No visitors or immigrants. You’re a foreigner in Japan.

No arguments but some looks. Only on trains. And nobody talks on the trains, they are either asleep or on their phones.

They are loosening mask requirements on May 8th so I’ll be curious to see if the people chill on the masks

I wish I had it in me to do what that stranger did here in the States. It bugs the shite out of me when people do this, especially on a golf course. I always want to ask if they throw all of their trash on the ground or just cigarette butts.

I keep hearing about no crime but doesn't the Yakuza still exist? I realize these aren't your run of the mill street thugs, more mob-like with the protection rackets, human trafficking and the drug trade plus white collar crime like banking and real estate.

If we were all Germans or the exact same ethic group, religion etc, it could be like that too. (Salt lake city) oh and we gave up all our weapons and a few basic freedoms.

But they are generally good people and they don’t put up with trash of any kind

I spent a week there about 10 years ago and loved it. Stayed in Tokyo then travelled by train down to Fukuoka and took a ferry to South Korea. I had many of the same observations as you. Went to a Nippon League pro baseball game which was an awesome experience. Super passionate fans. They have a funny little custom of all pulling out umbrellas in unison umbrella dance Beer girls walk around with mini keg backpacks and pour fans a draft at their seat. Customer service everywhere is top notch. No tipping. Incredibly clean city. Seemed like every other person smoked, but zero cigarette butts anywhere. Food was great. Always felt very safe, and covered a lot of ground around Tokyo. There were some odd quirks such as walking through a 3 story arcade in the afternoon and seeing dozens of grown men in suits and briefcases playing arcade games, and some disturbing ones such as the used panty vending machines another poster mentioned, and I saw what very much appeared to be child porn in street side shop right there on a main sidewalk. Tokyo is a massive city, with districts that are very unique from each other and each worth exploring. The train ride south from Tokyo down to Fuquoka through the countryside was beautiful and as you mentioned the train service is impeccable, and those bullet trains are crazy fast.

It wasn’t some utopia back then believe me.
I said awhile back that someone would come along and say:

"There was never some idyllic period where stores weren't ransacked by mobs and kids could play unsupervised in their neighborhood, or that if it did exist it was far more racist than our modern progressive era and therefore worse"

That day turned out to be today. Thanks, Clark.

They need to be English speaking. If they had prevailed in the war; Japanese would be the main language and kimonos would be the female wardrobe.
