A buddy of mine is a very old school, tobacco chewing redneck. He was dragged to Japan for his liberal daughter’s wedding. To a Japanese guy.

He said he loved it there so much that he almost didn’t come back.

Most peaceful place I've ever been. It took me 3 weeks to realize the "highschool girls" were actually university students. I thought all the girls in plaid skirts were kids but they ended up being my age. The family I lived with ate salad every morning for breakfast. Zero Crime. Zero issues. It was a great summer. I'd definitely consider living there....

The entire “melting pot “ was actually speaking of melting of the English, Welch , scots, Germans, French, Nordic countries, polish, and all the other European countries. The libs have changed it to mean the entire world.

Of course their gangs exist; reference here to no crime is no every day thuggery we have here. Pick any city here, big or small, park 50 + bikes on the grass: there no one steals them. Here, after a day, you might have 4-5 left. No home burglaries of the varieties & amounts you have here. The drug laws for foreigners are pretty strict & widely publicized in travel ads, shop lifting as well. As for the poor, besides my son's travels to many areas of Japan, in 4 weeks I traveled all over, small towns, rural areas & saw nothing like the ghettoes & slum-like areas we have here. i.e. they must hide the poor areas very very well.

Can you name those you consider shitholes? Not doubting, just, which do you consider shitty? And is it because of governance, like communism, etc

You want to excuse the shite because of governance? Government is only as effective as the people allow. North Korea is a whole bunch of dumbass groupthink.

When everyone thinks you only have two options to vote for. And those two options work together to screw you. You get a shite outcome.

I lived there for a couple of years in the 90s, with Japanese families. The experience makes me weep for America. Imagine an America that is competent, polite and highly conscientious .The Japanese are highly nuanced and there is some darkness under the surface, but still it is infinitely healthier as a society. It’s not even close. The West is in steep decline but they certainly aren’t.

To be fair, as a nation with the unofficial motto of “ the nail that stands out gets pounded down “, it’s important to remember that they wore masks back in the 90s when I lived there, and conformity and harmony is their way. For centuries. It’s annoying in a lot of ways if you live there and have to deal with it, but it’s their country.

Its was common before corona, and will continue to be.

Recently, a lot fewer people are wearing them, its going back to precovid numbers.

And many people wear them for different reasons. I've heard: if you are sick, if you don't want to get sick, because when I fall asleep on the train my mouth is open, I don't like to show my face (mostly girls), I didn't shave, etc etc

Many American cities were a lot like this up through the early 60s, even New Orleans believe it or not.

Our decline is due to our electorate which gets worse by the day.

Yeah, it would be interesting to compare them to other non-homogenous societies. Who has the most litter, worst train schedules and presents the most danger to students trying to take public transport to school? Is there a country like the later?

The govt. mask mandate has been lifted, mths ago. People who are wearing masks now do so strictly for personal reasons. A lot of the larger cities, Toyoko for one, have pollution issues & its population has been wearing masks for decades now. But it is not govt. mandated.

Lived in Okinawa for a year. The Japanese are just better people than Americans. Simple as that. Hardly ever see a fat person. No litter. Like you said, no real crime. Just better people tbh
