I can't ever feel right about taking more than a week at a time off.

Unless I'm out of town somewhere on a true vacation, I feel worthless after a few days away from work. I inevitably have to get my fix so will log in for a bit, which my wife (no pics) just LOVES.

If I took a month, it’d just be more work for me to ensure my clients had backup sessions and so on. Two weeks at a time is my max.

I much prefer having some 4-5 day weekends throughout the year to travel within a day’s drive. Or just to relax at home.

I have several observations on this I will not share. As a manager, I have to outwork everyone. I rarely take vacation. I roll over 1/2 my vacation every year.

Some I feel abuse it. Constantly taking weeks off, first to try and submit it before their coworkers, etc.

My vacation policy is if you have it, take it. It's my job to keep the ship afloat and manage the resources.

I also though have opinions based on the above who is invested in their job and career...and who skates by.

If your job can exist with you taking a full week off at time, the company should probably eliminate that job.

Very much depends on the job. If you’re on the line making widgets, sure. But most professionals can take a chunk of time off if they are intentional about their calendar far enough in advance and are willing to spend a few minutes a day via text/email to make sure nothing goes off the rails.

Work with people in Europe.
They’ll take 2-3 weeks off at a time like it’s nothing.

Yeah, that's just their normal culture. They all take 2 weeks to a month every year for "holiday" and travel to the States or to other parts of Europe. We had a German tech come to work on some of our Seimens hardware one time and he had just gone back to work after a 6 week vacation. He was amazed that we were amazed that they take that much time off at once. And the amount of mo ey that he was mandated (by the German government) to be paid to work outside of Germany while he was here was insane.

Tell you what I observed a few weeks ago: We were going through 2024 vacation polling. It’s the whole team choosing vacation from most seniority with company to least. Us old guys were choosing days around Thanksgiving and Christmas. New hats were choosing entire weeks in January.

DGAF what they choose; however, it sure seems like it would suck to have 11 straight months of work with no vacation.

Damn I need to come work for the same dealer you do. 30.5 years, and only get 4 weeks.

Evidently you are not a hunter. Taking off the entire month of December is as good as it gets for deer hunting.

I’m a millennial. I usually just take a Monday or Friday off here and there throughout the year because that’s usually all my past managers would approve, and they’d put me through the ringer just to get that one day. The only time I ever used all my PTO was when I was hospitalized with Covid. The places I worked at seemingly never let me take it, and when I did, I would still have to cover all of the work that I would have had to do while I was out. So, if I was already working 10 hour days, but needed a day off to go to a doctor’s appointment, that meant I was spending a whole week working 12 hour days to catch back up. Absolutely miserable.

I have only ever taken off more than 2 days at a time ONCE, and it was only because I had already notified them I would be leaving that job in a couple months, so I didn’t feel afraid to use some of that PTO to go on vacation for almost a week after averaging 77 hrs/week for 12 months straight.

There’s alot of people that are willing to work themselves to the bone and let everything else in their lives fall apart. I was raised by a man who had this way of thinking. Took me a while to realize it’s pretty dumb.

Your boss won’t remember all the time you spent away from home but your kids damn sure will.

We get vacation time, sick time, family leave time, community leave time, and some other type of time off. Plus we get one day a week to "work from home".

I have hundreds of hours built up. They offer all this time, but get a little pissy when you wanna use some.

I beg to differ.

At the beginning of this school year I had 112 days accumulated. Since I’m already in DROP, I was able to cash out 25 of those a few months ago. We get 10 days per year as teachers. More than half of my (female) colleagues use their allotment up every year and often get docked pay when they have to take additional days. I guess that makes me the “old head” in this scenario, but I greatly prefer my position.

Same. I cannot fathom it but would surely love to.
The last time I was “off” that long was in between jobs post-Katrina.

’ve found that younger workers (25-35) are more likely to take a Thursday/Friday off here and there through out the year and maybe one week long stint during the spring or summer time. Without fail this sends the older workers (45-60) into orbit. You’ll start to hear all sorts of passive aggressive comments like “must be nice” or “does he/she ever work”.

100% exactly how it goes down where I work. I get 4 weeks. I usually do one week long Caribbean/Central American beach or fishing vacation then a bunch of long weekends to offshore fish/hunt/saints road trips/LSU road trips. It drives the old people fricking crazy.

I don't get it. Are long weekends a Gen X/Millennial invention or something? can't be

I’ve never taken a full month, but I try to manage a three week international trip every couple of years. It’s good for the soul.

It really doesn’t, we just like to bitch and moan. You’ll be here one day, probably.

They try to buy our time back but I would make more working at another location and using my vacation. I already get 6 days off in a row every other week and two of my work days are half days, I really don't NEED the time off but you better bet I use it. Burning two weeks time to get 24 days off in a row is nice if you can get it approved. I think I am at 4 weeks 2 days vacation a year right now, another week sick but you can use them pretty interchangeably.
