At 40 I’m basically just in the Millennial generation (the Xenial term is definitely very real for people my age) and this is very similar to what I do.

My job splits time off into Vacation, Paid Time Off and Sick/Care. I get 4 weeks of Vacation, 1 week of PTO and 8 days of Sick/Care. It’s dumb but it has its purpose. Vacation can be rolled over. PTO is use it or lose it. It basically forces everyone to use at least 1 week a year.

I take 1 week off either late summer (August) or fall (September/October) for a big trip. I typically will take 3 days off for a mountain/
camping/hiking trip in May or June. I typically take 2 days off in the fall or just before Christmas to go to a Saints game/hang out in NOLA. The remaining 2-3 weeks I just use for long weekends throughout the year.

With my job Mondays are much busier than Fridays so I typically take Monday’s off for the long weekend or sometimes Monday-Tuesday.

It’s also nice not having kids so I’m not tied to any type of school schedule and can travel during cheaper times.

I never use my PTO and end up losing it. I was hoping I could transfer it to my wife with a different company in a different industry in a different state, but like Delta Miles, they can’t really be transferred.

I used to be able to cash out my PTO so I would try to take as little time off as possible. Unfortunately they changed policy recently and now it is use it or lose it. I usually sprinkle some long weekends in all throughout the year. It is nice when all the boomers are out for the month of December.

The purpose of FTO isn't for current employees, it gives us the ability to recruit talent from other companies without asking them to sacrifice the PTO rates they've accrued through seniority.

Say there's an engineer at company Y and he's a perfect fit for my team at company X. He's been with company Y for 15 years and gets 6 weeks of PTO per year. If I can only offer him 2 weeks of PTO, as a new hire, I have basically zero chance of getting him to come work for me.

FTO is becoming more and more common as companies more and more desperate for top talent. FTO, though not a defined total of days, is not supposed to be abused. 8+ weeks off in a single calendar year is certainly indicative of abuse. I'm not going to write him up or put him on a performance plan, I'm just going to ask him to keep it closer to 6-7 weeks (which was what his PTO/yr was before we moved to FTO).

It’s management that cares. Businesses that hire only enough employees and then when one wants to take a vacation, all hell breaks loose.

My old job would hire a bare bones crew and if we had one person gone, it was hell on earth. Couldn’t take off near holidays because we would be busy then. VP of our region taking in $4-$6million a year sitting in a chair but never wanted to pay for extra staff to give us a life. Oh, don’t forget the 7 off days per year. 10 after 3 years.

Use PTO when you want.

If someone taking their earned PTO creates an issue within the system, then it is on supervisors/owners to re-evaluate PTO policies.

I see a lot of complaining about unlimited PTO and folks abusing it, yet the company implemented it just so they wouldn't have to pay it out when that person leaves/retires.You can't have your cake and eat it too. Either you roll with unlimited PTO to avoid paying it out or you have capped PTO.

I'm so glad I no longer work at a place where PTO becomes and issue. Its usually

Me: Hey, I need next week off, is that cool?

Boss: I don't give a shite.

When I was at the bank, we'd have to choose our vacation days at the beginning of the year, and no two people from the same branch could be off at the same time. But they would let the people who had been working there the longest choose first. So we'd have these old arse tellers who have been there for 30 years gobbling up all the holiday weeks and leaving nothing for the rest of us.

That's not entirely true. Many companies limit how much can be rolled over to the next year to lessen those payouts. Additionally, FTO comes with the typical "manager's discretion" caveat so, yes, you can be called out for abuse.

if the company gets in a bind they will fire you without blinking and not think twice and never think about you again, you would have to be a boot licking idiot not to take your PAID time off whenever tf you feel

so its absolutely not unlimited but rather semantics to make the company seem to care about their employees while also tricking the employees, wonder what lawyer came up with that idea

what ever happened to comp time. Is PTO the substitute for comp time. 1 for 1 comp time was always a nonstarter.
