Observations of PTO usage between Older Workers v. Younger workers

I’ve found that younger workers (25-35) are more likely to take a Thursday/Friday off here and there through out the year and maybe one week long stint during the spring or summer time. Without fail this sends the older workers (45-60) into orbit. You’ll start to hear all sorts of passive aggressive comments like “must be nice” or “does he/she ever work”.
These same old heads will “forget to take a day off because they’re so busy” (always the martyr) and then take one massive month long vacation at the end of the year. IMO this is way more irresponsible than spacing it out reasonably through the year. Just something ive observed while being in the work force.

Old school mentality from before mental health concerns and burnout became better understood. I am in the mid 40's and have fully embraced using my PTO. Burnout is very real, and the work will still be there tomorrow.

Not at all. It can be depended on, unlike people that call in on friday with a "mental health day."
Im taking two months off this winter (Feb, March) which allows me to travel like I couldnt with lesser time. The schedules were covered two months ago.

Sounds like you’re describing non-hunters vs hunters, not young vs old.

All I got from this was the 25-35 crowd seems to be using their PTO more wisely than others to do fun shite on a long weekend because there's more to life than work

I’m an older worker. I’m in my 50s and have been with the same company over 30 years. I get 6 weeks vacation and can carry over one week. So in a given year I can have as much as 7 weeks vacation. But my wife only gets 2 weeks vacation. So, there’s no point for me to carry over any time from one year to the next. So what I’ll do is take random Friday’s off through the year, usually to spend the day working on whatever model is on my desk at that time. Right now I’m taking the week between Christmas and New Year to use up the last of this year’s days.
But frick a bunch of not using my days off. I’ve worked to hard for too long not to take advantage of what I’ve earned.

I love hearing these older baws talk about how they’re losing PTO at the end of the year because they failed to take it. Like it’s some fricking badge of honor.

Interestingly, I’m 49, and could give a good shite when co-workers take their PTO, or in what increments.

Or groveling to management about taking a whole week off last minute because they “gotta burn that PTO”.. no matter there are already like 10 people off that week and they requested it months ago.

Sounds like you burn most of your PTO all year and now you're whining because some are taking long vacations while taking advantage of some holiday days off.

I've also learned over the years that the workaholic mentality doesn't really get you much in terms of recognition in the actual workplace. Usually the only people that will remember you worked the weekend/off hours when you didn't really have to is your own family.

only time i’ve ever rolled over PTO was the 2 years i also got 6 weeks of paternity leave. kind of difficult to be invested in a job and take off 11 weeks in a single year.
