Yep, retail chains and chain restaurants were already dying a slow death but COVID accelerated it.

NYC isn’t going anywhere. It will, however, undergo a major change. The real estate bubble is popping. To entice ANYBODY to go back, property prices are going to have to drop drastically. Unfortunately, when that happens, the ghetto will simply take that area over. NYC is going to go through the seedy phase that is depicted in Death Wish, or Taxi Driver.

A friend of mine is a writer, shows on HBO and FX, and he and his writing partner both just moved out of LA to North Carolina and Tennessee. The looting being allowed while everyone else is on lockdown was the last straw for him, especially once work from home showed them they could write from anywhere for a lot cheaper than living in LA

The violent crime rate per 100k is lower in NYC than Huntsville. They just have the massive population to dilute their stats like Chicago.
This data probably isn't totally current but according to Neighborhoodscout.com Huntsville is 7.88 per 100k. NYC is 4.88 per 100k.

My neighborhood in BR had 0 violent crimes per 100k
