re: North Dakota or Shreveport?

I was raised in Haughton, now in the AF and have been stationed at both.
I’d go back to Minot in a heartbeat. The winters are tough but they are not that bad, and the spring/summer/fall are amazing. I love to hunt and the North Dakota options blow away Louisiana. Pheasant, grouse, mule deer, huge ag-fed whitetails, and more mallards and geese than I’ve ever seen anywhere else in my life. You are within east drives of Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota hunting opportunities, or even Saskatchewan. Minot is a very small base that is about 20 miles outside of the “city” of Minot. It is rural farmland America. If you like cities and restaurants and malls, you will be miserable. It is deceptively far up there.
Barksdale is the opposite weather, hotter than hell for 9 months of the year, but you have more restaurants and bars, stores and stuff like that. The hunting isn’t even comparable, hogs and whitetail in pine thickets…woodies and the occasional big duck in the swamps.
As far as the work, I enjoyed Minot more, the base was smaller and much more family oriented. The gym was nice and new. Barksdale was dilapidated and generally run down, the gym is a dump.
I just asked my wife and she said “Barksdale for city people and Minot for country people” and I generally agree with that assessment.

This is absolutely false. December through March are very cold with occasional blizzards, but May through October are very nice.

Yep. Has a very weird look to it flying in from 30k ft. Looks like the moon or something. Theodore National Park was pretty in the summer too.

Fair enough, but at some point in those 8 months I'm gonna want to venture off the couch and go find food, which also involves going outside.

I’ve been to Minot once before & happened to be there for the “first winter weather” of the year, and it was brutal. Just pumping gas felt like your face was gonna fall off.
They say that the way the plains and the weather moves Thru that specific region of the country, it’s as cold as parts of Alaska etc..
on a good note. , they have great bison steaks at every restaurant we stopped at. It’s an old oilfield town and fracking at one point was good economically, it sure about now? I remember seeing McDonalds & other fast food places with advertisements of $1500 signing bonuses & $15-20 hour, and this was close to 8-10 years
ago.
Don’t go to local Native Casino and play roulette. We stopped by just to check it out in middle of day. I threw $20 on the “number range” portion of the board, and I consecutively won several times in a row & I kept doubling my bets, after 3-4 x’s of that, they don’t say anything at all, but they throw up a “house limit” of like $20, and don’t honor my big bet..
And it was like a scene in a movie where they have these Tribal Leader looking Mob guys surrounding us & we just walked out, it was actually disturbing to see them act like that & screw your to your face and dare you to do something. My opinion on those legit natives up there is not a good one. They also screwed my buddy out of his frack water trucking contract.
If doing business with the natives In Minot, ND, put your wallet in front pocket & you better have everything documented legally to the T, or they will stab you hard & not blink an eye. They are ruthless up there to the Point is never do business up there. They used my good friend, his equipments, business plans etc… until they didn’t need him.
Long story, too long to text. But be careful of the natives & the cold is all I’m saying. And before anyone says “oh, that’s racist blah blah blah”, go screw yourself because It was that bad to see what the actual Tribe did to a lifelong friend in the oil business. Then add on what the casino did, I had enough to make an opinion.

I lived on Miont AFB as a kid. If he picks ND he will know where Fahrenheit meets Celsius.
Fahrenheit to Celsius
-40
Celsius to Fahrenheit (Swap Units)
-40°F= -40.00000°C
long days in the summer long nights in the winter

Minot, and he’d be a fool to choose Shreveport.

ND. Devil's Lake is one of the TOP walleye fisheries in the country. I've fished it before and it's a great time. Everyone always thinks of Lake of the Woods, etc but I liked Devil's Lake way more.
Id love to be able to fish it regularly.

Barksdale is nice from what I recall but was like 20 years since I’ve been.
Same I was there in 1991 and loved it. Almost stayed there in the reserve unit. Bossier was a good city back then, not sure it that is still the case.

No, this is absolutely true! When you need yo carry an emergency survival kit in your car if you get caught in blizzard, that’s too damn cold. It gets unpleasant here for maybe 3 months outta the summer….but you can at lest go outside without freezing. Screw that noise in Minot!

You might get murdered...but at least you won't be cold.

The fact that a lot of people said Shreveport/Bossier City here says a lot.
This an extremely bias message board towards Louisiana. You will not find another message board on the internet that hates Louisiana, it’s cities/towns, and the people of Louisiana more than Tigerdroppings.

Man, I’m willing to bet you’ve never even stepped foot in Bossier. The Base is in BOSSIER, not Shreveport. Bossier’s a good place to raise Family (especially North Bossier) & prob has more to do that Minot.

I recently read (Mike Johnson’s newsletter) that big changes are coming to BAFB, as in they’re getting the nukes “back.” Ostensibly that’s at least a partial reason for the new entrance at I-20/220 exchange.

Yes, I am familiar with the mission profile of both. Since he is coming from MacDill my assumption is he is not directly on a B-52 crew or maintainer.
That would mean he performs one of the hundreds of other jobs that goes on at any air force base.
Which again, who did he piss off?
