Buddy of mine was stationed at Minot, late 70s-early 80s, worked out on the flight line, said it would be an improvement if it was only miserable.

I used to work with a guy who was stationed on Shemya Island in the Aleutions in the sixties. He volunteered for Vietnam just to get off that rock.

I’ve known several people stationed at both, and they all said Barksdale by a lot.

I have been stationed at both. No fricking way I would go back to minot. Place is the worst base in the Air Force. Weather, middle of nowhere are just the beginning. It’s a true shite hole.

Former LSU basketball coach, Dale Brown, is from Minot, ND. After retiring from coaching he still lives in Louisiana. That should tell you something about Minot.

Minot is actually a nice base but the winters are brutal and it is far from alot of stuff.

If it was good enough for Dale Brown, it should be good enough for your friend.

I love the comments from South La folk, who have no fracking idea where Barksdale is even located. It’s one of the largest Air Force bases in the world & the only one in Louisiana, yet no clue.
Several b52 pilots live in my hood & when given the choice, it’s SBC by a mile.
If Barksdale was near Baton Rouge or New Orleans, it would’ve been closed a long time ago.

Minot is rough as hell - I use to deliver freight up there regularly and that is by far the coldest spot I've been to. I went up once and it was -50º with the wind chill, so cold my eyes started feeling like they were freezing over.

I like cold weather, but I don't know if I could handle living there.

There are few places I would choose Shreveport over, but North Dakota is one of them. F$&k that frozen tundra.

I would ask myself if it is time for a new career

The right: Job - People - Place

If I have 2/3 of 3, I can manage/thrive.

If I have 1 of 3, it is time for a change

If I have 0 of 3, it is time to rethink life

You lost me with that one. From what I read in posts on the OT I'd take any "civilization" over what you seem to have in Louisiana. Downvote away, but most of it seems like a crime ridden shithole.

I was ending my career in the Air force and had been in Alaska for 3 years and needed a change of scenery. In order to transfer out i had to extend an extra 6 months in the service. No worries because i just knew i would get a great assignment somewhere nice and warm , beaches etc... Couldnt wait to get me new orders. The day finally came and where did they have me going ? Fricking Minot North Dakota.

Will never forget the brochures they sent me. The title read Welcome to Minot , ND where the weather is cold but the people are warm. It must have been my lucky day because one of the guys in my Squadron was also transferring out and he had got orders to lovely Witcha Falls, Tx. He was from Pennsylvania and wanted to be closer to home . I was from La. so we switched orders. That's my Minot story. Sorry i couldnt give you more. That placed looked awful even in the brochures Shreveport for me if i had a choice.

How long did it take you to come with a scenario where Shreveport actually wins?

Is he Security Forces or something? If so, Minot for the job. If not, Barksdale.

Actually, Minot is a much better place to raise a family. Less crime, MUCH better schools, and an hour south of the Canadian border.

Cons: Food sucks, cold, middle of nowhere.

You are confusing Bossier City with Shreveport. Bossier City is a nice place to raise a family, with low crime, and good schools.
