you’re really making a run at “most hated new OT poster of 2019” award.

A lot of people are damn luckily their dads were born before them.

I just want to see what the OT thinks about this viewpoint. If everyone read his book to get an idea, it sort of makes sense. When we say successful here, it’s more about being a billionaire type.

Asians reliance on rice meant they learned the value of hard work and perseverance – which shows through in their better ability at maths (also their language helps).

You’re dangerously close to becoming a cucked soy boy.
If you’re not there already.

I've listened to outliers on audio 6-7 times and have concluded Malcolm gladwell to be a world class hack. He's basically the anti-Thomas Sowell

Let's have a test (well y'all have it because I will be dead by the end).
Pick 100 25 year olds who will spend their lives waiting for their share of the luck to happen. Hell, pick some rich ones in the group.
Now pick 100 who plan on working their asses off and include some "disadvantaged" ones.
Check on them in 25 years.

Let me tell you something about it, kid. Everybody gets one chance to do something great. Most people hardly ever take the chance, either because they're too scared or because they're unable to recognize it when it spits on their shoes. This is your big chance, and you should never let it go by...

You’re doing a fine job of making yourself suck

Gladwell will get a lot of hate bc he looks at things differently, similar to the freakanomics guys.
He’s right about a couple of his ideas though.
The born in fall thing is absolutely correct though.

Great book. I would say the effectiveness of hard work can be dramatically influenced by environment.
No doubt Bill Gates worked his arse off and is brilliant, but he probably wouldn't be as successful if he didn't go to that one particular high school.
The birth months of NHL players was amazing too.
Likewise, it is statistically likely a genius is in rural China, India, or Africa that will never be more than the smartest dude in the village.

I was surprised to see Obama relegated to the OT in his retirement

I'm sure that you think that is true. Unfortunately you are entitled to being wrong. But thanks for sharing.

It’s been a hot minute, but I think it’s about students who are on the older side for their classes being better in sports because they develop a tad earlier and get more opportunities because of that. Junior hockey in Canada is an extreme example as some absurd % of future NHLers from Canada are born in the first 4 months after the age cut off date.
