It’s been a hot minute, but I think it’s about students who are on the older side for their classes being better in sports because they develop a tad earlier and get more opportunities because of that. Junior hockey in Canada is an extreme example as some absurd % of future NHLers from Canada are born in the first 4 months after the age cut off date.
Correct.
It shouldn't be a surprise though. Holding kids back intentionally has been done for decades. Being on the older end of their classmates gives them a greater chance at success both in sports and academia.

What were the drivers behind you not dropping out of HS and just doing drugs all day?
You're confusing probability with choice.
Yes our circumstances can have an affect.
Yes we make our own choices
Yes our circunmtances can be overcome and negated.
You have 100% power over the decisions you make regardless of circumstances

Nope.

How much?

Yes we make our own choices
If we don't choose all the factors that led to that choice, is it really a choice?

If our circumstances have an affect (like you stated above), how can we also have 100% power over the decisions?

But then you have no excuses and nothing to blame.

Absolutely. It's the opposite of fatalism which controls the philosophy and f most people.
You're a product of the decisions you make. You cannot control external things, but it's the internal things that decide your fate.

Gladwell is talking about extreme success like billionaires. Not every day success, which is almost always attainable if people make sound decisions.
Discussions around this always remind my of Nick Saban and his "process".
It is his version of this:
Essentially, his process is very simple. Do the little things correctly every day and eventually it will pay off. In my career, I think of the little things as being responsive to emails, dressing well/looking professional, keeping up with industry trends/literature, befriending people on upward trajectories in my company/industry, keeping my mind sharp with diet and exercise, staying later than my boss every day, etc.
One day, all those little things will pay off handsomely for me. I don't have to be the smartest person in the building or work 80 hour weeks, you just need to do the little things to create opportunities for yourself and if you do this, you'll be prepared for those opportunities when they present themselves.

but everyone knows at least a couple of stories of people who pulled themselves up out of impossibly terrible circumstances by virtue of nothing other than their very own willpower.

OF course you are
You're a product of your decisions.
You can be independent or dependent. Fatalists are always dependent.
Fatalism is the one thing that holds Louisiana back the most.
Circumstances are one thing, your choices in regard to them are another.

Gotta agree.

You are completely missing my point
what decides this?
you are focusing on the outcomes, not the drivers

I agree there is no such thing as a 100% self-made, successful person. Every single successful person has had varying levels of luck, perseverance, and someone, or someones, taking a chance on them along the way.

You're under the impression these "drivers" will control your decisions. That's not always the case.
Life is full of people who broke free of this fatalistic perspective and became free thinkers. Their backgrounds didn't control who they became

why and how did these people break free? what caused them to do it and not others?

I built this company with my two own hands. Just me, that computer and an eight million dollar loan from my father.

Introspective thinking.
Every day decisions
Rejecting "old ways"
Becoming independent if groups or tribes
