It's fricking amazing how this works.
Now, to be fair, you have to be smarter than average in many cases. You can work yourself to death like that horse in Animal Farm. You have to cut bait at times. Some hard-working folks never make it because of this fear of cutting bait.
But, you're right. You make your own luck.
Fail out of school and/or develop a bad drug habit? That's not bad luck, motherfricker.

Is this where we pretend that Trump wasn't made by his daddy, and that his businesses didn't start going south once his daddy died and couldn't bail him out anymore?

outliers is an interesting document that explains some stuff. the bell curve did a similar review and quickly became racist attributed. takes much more discussion than this board has the capacity for.

I think that's pretty cynical a view point. Sure, some of those points are true, it's no lie some individuals who are born into wealth or powerful family names have an easier time, but people can work to make themselves successful if they are bright and are dedicated enough

You know all those millionaire abound in the projects. It doesn't require education, preparation, and execution.
Wakanda was not just an illusion. It actually happened and the story magically appeared on paper. Nobody put pen to paper.

This is an incredibly lame take and reeks of jealousy in an attempt to minimize the accomplishments of others.
You can be given all the opportunity in the world, but if you lack the drive, discipline, and awareness to do something with it then it doesn’t matter.
Parents can definitely help/hurt by influencing kids towards better/worse values during their formative years, but everyone knows at least a couple of stories of people who pulled themselves up out of impossibly terrible circumstances by virtue of nothing other than their very own willpower.

You still have to make the most of the opportunities given to you. I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to do my job but I busted my arse once I was given the chance.

I can understand this point of view, but I think Gladwell isn’t really minimizing accomplishments as much as he is explaining the factors that attributed to success.
Take for example his 10,000 hour theory (can’t become master at any task/subject until you spend 10,000 hours learning and practicing). That’s a lot of time, and of course effort is attributed.
He’s simply saving that effort alone isn’t guaranteeing success, and that other factors not often calculated can have a tremendous impact (like, the month your born).

This is 99% truth about politicians and 0% about hard working Americans.

Let me tell you something about it, kid. Everybody gets one chance to do something great. Most people hardly ever take the chance, either because they're too scared or because they're unable to recognize it when it spits on their shoes. This is your big chance, and you should never let it go by
You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go

Further, Gladwell is not talking about general success in one's career but being beyond wildly successful. If you are talking about billionaires and people very close to that level there is almost certainly a lot of luck and other variables outside the control of the individual that allows this level of success. Anyone that argues against this and has a net worth less than 100 million dollars has to really consider themselves a failure and not at all dedicated to their success.
I think most Americans can bootstrap their way to a fairly financially comfortable life but the huge leap to hundred of millions or billions of dollars will almost certainly show a string of non-controllable variables that broke their way.

Your chances of becoming successful are increased if you learn to say no. No to sex without birth control and protection. No to skipping school. No to being lazy. No to committing crimes. No to getting face tats and piercings. No to hanging out with bums

You read that book and that was your conclusion?
My conclusion was that you can become world class in anything with 10,000 hours of practice. Opportunities will present themselves to those who are prepared to take them.
Those who are of that mindset to improve themselves get lots of opportunities. I also see a shite ton of kids with opportunity in front of their face but they lack the attitude to take advantage.
