The only friend I have that is a half a billionaire told me that he has been extremely lucky in his investments. He is only 37 and didn’t come from money. He never went to college. He started a commercial cleaning company when a junior in HS and 3 years later it was several divisions including restaurant kitchens, hotels, offices, etc.. He sold it and invested the proceeds into a finance company with 2 other dudes. He bought his partners out within a year because their impatience with projected deals that didn’t happen. Then he “fell” into a deal that he attributes entirely to luck and timing. He flew into the radar screen of a major financial investment company and they bought him out for $50m at age 25. He is now majority owner (usually 51%_60%) of many small to medium sized businesses. He puts up the start up capital for someone with a very good idea and business sense and lets them get rich while he gets richer. He has had some investments not pan out but has learned a lot about what is high risk vs a near sure thing. He has the money to have that latitude to make a mistake because he never puts in more than he is okay with losing($100k-$250k).
But yes, he attributes the first hit that made it all possible to timing and luck. Now he is just very discriminating in what he invests in and just grows his wealth organically. He has very little to do with the businesses he is majority owner.

You make opportunities with hard work not luck
Luck is bill gates mother being best friends with the ceo of ibm
Luck is buying a coal mine and then discovering a gold mine is there also
Y’all are confusing the two
Both are important

Not always. I knew tons of guys growing up who had dads that owned law firms, construction companies or were high up in hospitals and their kids got to goof off for as long as they wanted until they decided it was time to grow up and take over the successful family business.

Exactly. It is what it is.

I drilled oil wells for a living
I used seismic data to identify target oil sands
Real case example :
We drill for my target anomaly and find 50 feet of pay sand. Yay successful well.
But the pay sand came in 400 feet above my target sand I was drilling for. My target sand was a thick wet sand of no economic value.
But the well is successful because of the pay sand I drilled through (but had no idea was there) on the way to my target sand
Am I successful because I was lucky the pay sand was there that I did not expect
Or am I successful because I created an opportunity to drill a well based on my efforts that never would have encountered the unknown pay sand if I did not drilled for “some” reason
Or am I successful like my boss who has the same last name as his grandfather which is the same name as the company I work for

There is no such thing as a self made person.
Everyone who is rich and successful right now are there because of a series of lucky events, rare opportunities and external factors outside our control.
You sound like a loser.
Self made people become what they are because they can overcome circumstance, not avoid it.
Most of life is outside our control, but it doesn't appoint us king. We decide internally whether we will make it or not, whatever that realistic goal, may be.

Most people aren't born into that.

It may be luck that an opportunity exists but it is not luck that one has the presences of mind, the strength and the intelligence to seize the opportunity.

why would one think that is what I'm suggesting?

Ironically, everthing in the OP completely dismantles the logic of white privilege and intersectionality but the OP won't understand that

Correct
Unless your parents gave you a bunch of money to start a business, you've earned your own way.
We are products of our decisions.

No.
What were the drivers behind you not dropping out of HS and just doing drugs all day?
What factors led you to make the decisions that made you successful?

The OP's summary/conclusion is far too simplified.

You obviously cannot take luck out of the equation, but a lot of those individuals put themselves in the position for when an opportunity came around they were able to jump on it.

I find the topic of "self made" and/or free will to be very interesting
its also a topic which a lot of people do not like to discuss and are very close minded
its all very interesting to me
