Kids can be still held back if their grades/test scores were abysmal before hand. Each district is different. I know in mine we will be having Zoom conferences at the end of May to discuss students who we feel should be retained.

They have been told that they can pick up work packets at the school, at the lunch distribution, or it can be mailed to them. The work packets can be used in lieu of online, and must be returned.
I am sure there will till be excuses.
But, it's basically extra credit at this point.

We didn't get the free meals because we don't have transportation.
I'm playing devil's advocate here because many years ago I worked at the inner-city schools. It's much easier to give the kid the C than it is to fight with all the excuses. At the end of the day, the ones fighting this aren't going to college

That's interesting.
The way we have it set up in Jefferson County (Louisville, KY) is the student can't hurt the grade they had on March 13 (our last day physically in the building). They can improve on it with work turned in.
If you were failing when we left on the 13th, you would receive an "I" (incomplete) and will not receive credit for the course. And you'll have to do summer school if you need that credit.

The system is fine. It's a lot of shitty parents who act like they don't have time to spend with their kids that are the problem.

As a teacher (in LA) I can say that those students who had an F going into the stay-at-home order and who did not do the online work will get what they earned - an F.

On the one hand, it's hard to believe that a student that had an F average going into the shutdown will be passed.
On the other hand, part of a school's grade on the "report cards" that the state puts out is percentage that graduate. So, it would probably be naive to think that some schools will not try to graduate every senior they can right now and push through the underclassmen.
I'm not sure if or how they will do the school grading reports this year with Leap being waved and school-wide ACT at least up in the air, but yeah, there is an incentive for schools to push them along and out.
