It is the most impressive city in the US for sure, hard to debate that.
Greatest? Not IMO. Weather and sunlight matters. NYC is cold a lot of the year and in the fall and winter, by 2 or 3pm the sun is pretty much blocked by all of the buildings in Manhatten and all over the city.

As far as New York, it looks like a very interesting place to visit but I don't want to live anywhere with a high cost of living. Been there, done that.

This may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen on this site. Philadelphia is basically New Jersey city, and a shithole.
Manhattan is the best city in the U.S. for sure. The bar scene is unrivaled, the food is as good as it gets, there’s a quadrillion things to do with your family, there’s a major company headquarters within a rocks throw of anywhere on the island, Broadway, the park, etc etc...
The only downsides are traffic and high cost of living which you will find in any major city. And the cold, frick the cold.

Also, this is something you only hear about cities that suck, relatively speaking. It's like the equivalent of saying a white football player is scrappy and a coach's son - you're using subjective measures because the kid doesn't stand up to the objective measures that everyone can appreciate.

Asheville is about as big of a city as I can stand. Anything bigger is just sprawl upon sprawl. Least amount of homeless and violence with maximum amount of culture. When NC legalizes weed, it'll be one of tGOAT cities.

I personally love the place, it does take some acclimatization and shifting of attitudes...

NYC is meh. Just another large city.
I prefer Madrid or Rome myself. Hell even in the US I'd take Seattle or Boston over NYC.

I know that people that have never been probably think you are bullshitting, but you are dead on. We went to NYC over the summer, and I was absolutely floored at how many beautiful women there were, everywhere. Foreign and domestic.
Another thing is that I thought that it would be more expensive than it was based on what I'd always heard, and from what I thought I remembered when I went when I was in high school. The food prices, specifically, weren't too much different than here in Birmingham.
NYC is incredible, and I can't wait to go back.

Yeah if weather is a serious concern, LA, San Francisco, and other coastal California cities are way, way up there.
