Been twice in 8 months with my dtr. We love it there. Planning a trip back at Christmas but in two years. I'm sad about needing to wait -- I could pack a bag asap and go if I could.

We rented an Apt in Greenwich Village a block from the 1 train for 4th of July. Just amazing amount of options with a setup like that. Will be going back next summer

This absolutely used to be my position as well, especially when it came to raising a family. Now tharthe kids are getting older, I could definitely see myself living there if the finances were right. I still enjoy my short visits. Of course, I’m also a big fan of Chicago, LA, SF, and Miami.

Sounds awesome. Lived there for about 10 weeks for training for work back in 1989. 23 years old in Manhattan with no expenses except fun.

It's definitely the most diverse city in the most diverse country. I'm not sure how you would define "greatest," cause I can name several cities around the world where I'd prefer to live.
I love going to visit and always enjoy being a tourist there, but give me literally any Southern city to live in over NYC

You'd guess wrong. Amsterdam is a nice city but it's not on the same planet as NYC. Completely different size and scope.
NYC is great but it's really Manhattan we're talking about here. And it's expensive as hell to live there. Sure, you can live in Queens or Long Island or Jersey. But to have to commute to the city would suck. Have a friend who lived there for 2 years. She worked for Michael Kors at their headquarters. Made decent money but was still poor as frick because she wanted to live in a decent place and not have a hellish commute.
Then again, all of these issues could be solved with money. If you can afford to live there, you'll get the best of what life has to offer. Similar to living in Monte Carlo. Or Geneva. Or Paris. Or London. That said, I have no problem accepting that as far as modern achievements go, it's probably the greatest city on earth. As far as the US is concerned, there's nowhere in the South that compares. There's nowhere in the South that compares to Chicago either.
