Made it to the USA. Get ready for beef prices to go up. I think it was a 1-3 week old calf that had the maggots in the umbilical cord wound.

That's funny, on June 2nd the CDC sent us an email stating that the NWS fly was not present in the US. 2 days later it is.

Probably bad timing. NVSL confirmed it on the 3rd, which means a presumptive positive sample was sent in probably on Monday. So, it was already here when they sent that.

They had an outbreak in Florida and were able to contain it because of the geography of the Florida Keys.

Parasite causes ugly open wounds in healthy tissue that look like something out of a horror movie

NWS doesn’t cause the wound. In the key deer case, and outbreak of ticks started the wound and then was exacerbated by the exposed tissue of the velvet antler growth which served as entry points for the fly and ultimately led into the parasites boring into the brain cavity and killing the deer in some cases. The flies can only travel so far, so the geography did contain it, although the environment is ideal for the establishment of insect colonies.

DOGE cut funding and staff that monitors bird flu and screwworm, and USAID worked to stop the spread of NWS up from Central America.

Probably a coincidence though.

There doesn't have to be a wound. Mucus membranes etc can serve as an opening too.

The lesions are very graphic in many cases since the larvae invade healthy tissue.

Fair warning there's a disgusting picture below:
