As middle-aged American male with normal to low blood pressure, low total cholesterols/LDL/triglycerides, and normal blood sugar, who probably weighs more than almost anyone else who posts here:

The magazines that throw incredibly overweight, unhealthy women (where are the men, by the way?) on the covers and then have a tag line saying "healthy" really burn me. Now if they put an obese person on a cover and want to talk about anything else... fine. I think they are trying to get a point across saying "fat people contribute to society and are human and have a lot to offer so stop discrediting them"... which is all true and fine, but don't dare say they are healthy or have any positive health habits going for them.
We should respect and treat all people fairly no matter their size - but not glorify being unhealthy.

Bingo.
I honestly don't give a shite if you're overweight or obese. I would never treat someone different based off of their appearance. But if you try to tell me that 2+2=10, you're wrong and I'll think you're an idiot. That's why it bugs me when they try to pass it off as healthy and then spread that false narrative. That's wrong. Even worse are the ones that try to shame people for attempting to lose the unhealthy weight. How much shite did Adele catch when she dropped pounds?
I really feel for those kids under 12 or so that are bigger because their parents are bigger. The kids had no choice in the matter, they don't understand nutrition or health. They aren't the ones grocery shopping and buying nothing but soda, hot pockets and frozen pizzas.

Food is different and food supply is different. People are taller now and naturally have thicker bone density. Weightlifting is also more prevalent. Inside desk jobs are also more prevalent. We Can’t use an 80 year old chart to say who is overweight or underweight today. It’s a different time. Most people didn’t even have enough food to eat back then.
6ft 1 220 is about the level where I begin to feel less than ideal. I’m 195 now and people are always commenting how skinny I look and are shocked that I even weigh in the 190’s. Meanwhile, I go to the doctor and as he’s slapping a 27 bmi on my chart, all while we both laugh at it because we both know it’s ridiculous. Anytime I drop below 200, he actually gets concerned and encourages me to pick up a few more pounds.

I've always called them light poles but I guess anything is possible if you want it bad enough.

the average height since 1960 has increased only about an inch. weight has went up almsot 25 lbs.
Bone density did increase because of better nutrition, but are you so dumb you think we increased bone density enough to gain 25lbs.

no shite, cause they are fat. When the majority of the country is fat and many boarding on obese, of course they think someone that is barely overweight is skinny. And of course they think you should gain weight, makes them feel better about themselves.

well your doctor is a fricking moron or fat and trying to make himself feel better.
no doctor that is worth a shite is going to tell you gain weight when you are in the overweight catagory on bmi, not on purpose. get a new doctor.

what has changed besides more people being fat? fat is still fat. anything above 18% body fat is well....fat. 15-18% used to be average.

not really renough to make a difference especially when you factor in

the idea that a doctor would "be concerned" about a 6'1" person dropping below 200 lbs is the dumbest thing I've read in a long time

I’ve got a bit of history of my weight fluctuating. I was 6ft 1, 135 before I went to college. I got up to a chiseled 185 by the end of college. Had a 6 month bout with depression and dropped all the way down to 150 again. Doc prescribed me to go to the gym and to eat 4000 cals a day. I got a desk job, incorporated some protein supps and got up to about 220. I felt a bit heavy and dropped to a chiseled 205. Coronavirus hit and I couldnt go to the gym or eat as much as I used to, so I dropped down to 185 again. Gym’s finally reopened so I’m back up to 195 ish. Goal weight is about 210 and then I’ll cut back down to 200.
Doc wouldn’t just prescribe the weight gain to everyone. He’s a long time family friend and he just knows that I am personally better off at 205 than 150. 205 generally means I’m working out 5-6 days a week. Sub 200 means I’m eating 1 meal a day and not exercising.
My doc is about 6ft 5 200
He’s a healthy guy, and he knows weight is only a number. Overweight for someone, might be underweight for someone else. Healthcare should not be a one size fits all system that’s based on antiquated health standards.

Nope, just because you personally feel better at 205 doesn't mean it's the healthiest weight.
I am personally extremely happy you are lifting like that and have found a good place. 205 is right for you but you need to realize you are the exception and most guys don't go to the gym much less go 5 times a week.
And it's not a one size fits all, there are exception, like yourself. But in general bmi is a good indicator for 90% of the general public.
