By that chart I could be 130 lbs and be a normal weight. I would look like the Machinist at 130.

no you wouldn't

this statement right here is a perfect example of just how we have skewed our idea of fat

you are part of the problem

well you lift. but you could easily be 205 and be in great shape and not be listed as overweight.

We should have something similar to the presidential fitness tests they had us do in elementary/middle school but for TD.

That should exist for people in general. There should be minimum fitness standards that exists for people by age. That could determine who actually lives a "physically fit" lifestyle.

I say that for the people who aren't even 35 but consider going to the gym 2 maybe even 3 times a week to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes a full workout. They barely even sweat if at all, and they walk slow enough that they can be on bluetooth talking on the phone the whole time.

I read some article once that in being asked how active one is that it is generally overstated by 50 to 75%.

What you’re not getting is that evolutionarily speaking, you are supposed to be lean. Very lean. Look at photos of people throughout history, especially at the beach or somewhere they’re not wearing clothes. The human form is supposed to be trim, lanky and you should see ab muscles clearly defined. That’s without working out.

As others have noted, our perception of what a normal body looks like is way too skewed. What the body should be is now considered abnormally skinny. The average US soldier in World War II, upon entrance into boot camp, was 26 years old, 5’ 8”, and weighed 144 pounds. This was what the average American adult male looked like before sedentary lifestyle, fast food, processed sugars and video games.

That BMI chart is BS though. In my prior life, I was in the gym or running five days a week and performing strenuous tasks at work daily. I was 5’11” and a solid 190 with very low body fat. That chart has me as unhealthy / obese at that weight and height. bullshite.

Sorry to post this pic again, but this magazine is saying both that being morbidly obese is healthy and something to celebrate, but success is an illness. What the frick are these people trying to accomplish with shite like this?

stop saying the ideal weigth for 5'9" is 130lbs. its between 150-160lbs for a male that doesnt lift. Which is pretty damn correct. The chart says 130lbs is just a healthy bmi, which again is correct. You wouldnt have health issues from that bmi, prolly would be weak as shite though.

the ideal weight for someone 5'9" would be closer to George St-Pierre than it would be 130 lbs.

you are part of the problem spreading false info.

It's not BS if you don't lift heavy weights which the majority of Americans fall into that category.

so you were an exception, not the rule. You do understand 190 on 70% of US males at that height is fat, right?

Stop trying to use an exception to make it seem like bullshite. 90% of the country doesnt lift weights, I mean truely lift weights.

I agree with everything you said but this. For most, performance suffers when that low of BF, especially if not working out. People were that lean from not being able to afford more. A simple true 15% BF should be the goal for most people.

But yea...100% our vision on what is considered normal is very very skewed.
