The Port of New Orleans has secured a key federal approval for its planned container terminal in St. Bernard Parish, a major step forward in the years long effort to build a facility that will help the region remain competitive in global trade.
In a release Monday, the port said the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers Corps has granted permits authorizing construction of the Louisiana International Terminal, or LIT, which will be located in Violet about 17 miles downriver of New Orleans.
The facility, which is expected to cost at least $2.3 billion, according to the most recent estimates, is considered critical for keepting Port NOLA and the state’s maritime economy competitive because the giant container ships that account for a growing share of world shipping are too large to journey upriver and safely pass under the Crescent City Connection bridge.

When people complain about a plant around them, or a train, they are told the plant or the train was there first.
99 percent of the people who live close to this are against it. Avd they were there first.
The state and federal government are pushing through a project against the will of the local residents and their local government.
Not private industry, even. The port is a state government facility (port Nola is a state agency)

Well if you live next to the river, expect river things to happen.
Its one of the few economic assets this state has and this is a huge one.
Eta: the traffic is going to be biblical

Save are St Bernard

I get some people are annoyed this is being built in their backyard. However this long term will be huge for St. Bernard. The place is a shell of what it was pre Katrina. Yet people are outraged. Guess you can’t please everyone.

The people of Louisiana want development but they don't want data centers, Space X sites, or new ports. So what kind of development do they actually want?

Something can be a net benefit for the state and really suck for the people impacted. Both can be true. If I lived there being told to take one for the team wouldn't go over too well.

All of that rail is going to frickup a lot of things in the parish.

New Orleans became a major city because of the Mississippi and trade. Now people don’t think it should be used for it?

The river and tourism are the backbones of the area's economy. New airport helps with the tourism and a modern container facility will be fantastic for the river side of the equation.

Dat St Bernard is on da map and we don’t play. Ask me how I know, I’m from around the way

This is needed because many container ships can't fit under the bridge.
SB residents seem to not like it.

Honestly. I said in 2005 after the storm. That the 9th ward should be an industrial area. Make it a consolidated port. They have rail. Build up Florida Blvd to handle trucks and it would have been perfect. Instead they let it resettle

They are building a special access road so shouldn’t impact traffic. I guarantee you they have spent tons of money on traffic impact studies

Look at the positive financial impact this will have on St. Bernard. The parish needs this, as does the state.
Nola’s peer ports are lapping them. That’s not good for anyone in this state.
Yes, it sucks for those who live in the immediate area; that’s always the case for major infrastructure projects. But what do you do? Say no to needed infrastructure because there will always be people negatively impacted by major projects like this.

You'll never please everyone. However, finding ways to immediately share a bit of the financial benefits directed to the private investors getting government contracts is where I would begin to sooth some wounds with projects like this.

Serious question since that isn't my industry. Are there a lot of those ships wanting to make a port call in New Orleans?
Or is this an attempt to gain that business?

Apparently we have rail infrastructure that is beyond normal as well as quick access to interstate as well as the ability to ship product by barge. The parish will get a large bump in tax revenue from this.
