New Orleans man sentenced to probation for biting another man's penis

A New Orleans man who nearly bit off another man's penis while high on meth in the French Quarter in February was sentenced this week to probation.

In a plea deal that his attorney called a win, Jeremy Mitchell, 42, pleaded guilty as charged on Tuesday to possession of methamphetamine and dangerous instrumentalities. In exchange, felony charges of aggravated battery and second-degree battery against Mitchell were reduced to simple battery—a misdemeanor, said his defense attorney, Michael Kennedy.

The fear that drove Mitchell to fire a "warning shot into the air" and bite his sex partner's penis had a simple origin, Kennedy said.

"Essentially, it all comes down to meth hallucinations," he said.

Mitchell's gunshot summoned New Orleans police officers to the 1000 block of Dauphine Street at around 11:23 p.m. on Feb. 23. They found a man with a bloody crotch who said Mitchell had clamped down on his penis during meth-fueled oral sex, refusing to let go. Mitchell fired a shot at him while fleeing, the man said.

Police at the time said the man's injury would require "specialized, possibly long-term treatment" and have "lasting painful effects."

Orleans Parish Criminal District Judge Robin Pittman issued Mitchell a two-year suspended sentence with two years of active probation. He must be assessed for substance abuse.
