How would you feel if restaurants didn't disclose prices and charged what they thought individual diners would pay?

It shouldn't be. But if the government is going to regulate private industry within an inch of its life anyway, this law at least makes sense.

transparency is good but greedy bean counters will try to find any way around it they can

We really have to protect people from being able to negotiate a salary these days?
It protects everyone from wasting time. I could see a job title I want, but they advertise for a salary 25% under market value I won't waste time applying.

That doesn't make sense in this context.
That would be analogous to the employer not telling the individual what they'd be making before they hired them.

What?

How does that benefit you? You already know they make more than you.
Yearly review time, it’s helpful.

I’d prefer they disclose the salary, but not forced to by the government. Just more government overreach.

I wasn't using "charged" in the past tense, but rather making a determination to charge.

So if a company doesn't want to show they are hiring someone and paying them more than the person who had the position before, they can just advertise it for that amount then give that person a raise after they are hired?
Is this to prevent people applying for a job that will not want it because of the salary? I hate these laws that have a bunch of loopholes to the point it doesn't even make sense to have.
But then again its in NY state so IDGAF.

It would be great if they would disclose without intervention. That said, you know they won’t and this absolutely benefits people.
Of all the things to be complaining about government overreach in, let’s start with the things that hurt people or provide no benefits to anyone

I love this.
I think it’s BS that it’s just unknown what you could get or couldn’t get for pay

This is a good thing for workers. It provides an additional, valid data point for workers to understand the market and other job opportunities.
Weird that people are shitting on this.

Have you looked at job sites lately? I'd say most postings have at least a number+, if not a range.

No. It’s based on the meme that people of different races are offered different starting salaries because certain groups are more likely to negotiate starting salaries.
So if they have to disclose it everyone knows what the job pays. In theory. It’s nonsense.

We need a law to prevent people from “wasting time”?

I mean, I also got underpaid at my new job. I went from a job that highly underpaid it’s workers (and they were open about it) to a job I was so happy to be getting a large increase I didn’t quite realize I was about 10% lower than the average person at my position level till after my negotiations were done.
To be fair though, I figure my position level actually varies 20% either way to the base salary when experience and other things are factored in

Don’t really have a problem with it. I worked for a large company 20+ years ago that did this. It was like govt, jobs had a pay grade and the pay band was common knowledge for each grade.
We just filled position at my current company, and out of dozens of applicants, the pay grade was below their needs. What a waste of time for everyone.
