Most of the Fentanyl and many other synthetic illegal drugs originate from China but Mexico is a huge supplier as well. They are a major supplier of fentanyl and meth
Seizures of fentanyl at the border are down from 3500 lbs to around 750lbs in the last 3 years but we all know that's just a fraction of what actually makes it across the border

You are asking two questions and have an answer for one, the cost answer.
Things like fentanyl are cheap because they are synthesized, and because they are so potent, they are easy to smuggle due to smaller volumes being needed. Drugs dealers are always looking for higher profit drugs that produce new, different, more potent, or more addictive highs. At their core they are capitalists just like McDonald's.
Your second question is why mix drugs that have seemingly opposite effects. Without getting into the pharmacology, polydrug mixtures often produce different desired effects. I had an old friend who was a rec drug "guru" and he explained it like this: different drug classes are like primary paint colors. You start with the basic drug classes, and you can mix lots of different "colors". Being someone who avoids even script and OTC drugs when possible, I had to take his word for it.

Fentanyl is not destroyed by low temp smoldering tobacco, marijuana etc..
Like anything else it's compounds are destroyed by extremely high heat- 1500 degrees or more
Don't know where you reside but here in Livingston Parish this is sadly something we're dealing with a few times per month. These cases don't make the news because the victims rarely have any family that can afford to post an obituary.
If you research the fentanyl related deaths you'll find that the decedents aren't purchasing "fentanyl" rather they are purchasing more traditional drugs that might be laced with fentanyl if they're lucky.

If I'm a butcher, in a street full of butcher shops and beef is expensive, and there are a bunch of cats running around...
I can
A) cut my ground beef with cat meat, making it stretch farther. Hell, maybe certain people like my pussy infused burgers. Maybe some of the other butchers start cutting their beef with the plentiful , if stringy, cat meat. Maybe even some rat meat for good measure. Sure some people die, but PETA says they deserve it anyway.
Or,
B) Advertise CAT FREE BURGERS!. "Hey kids, cat got your tongue? Tired of ratty-cat burgers from the butchers down the street. Come on down to BEEF CERTAIN and get yourself some pure, 100% cow meat beef. You can even watch us grind it up, pussy free! No Mr. Mittens in our meatloaf. And wouldn't you pay a premium for pet-free pot roast?"

Actually, you are. You are stating that bad decisions by teenagers are to be expected, and thus we should feel bad for the consequences they suffer, not to mention the consequences their choices have on their families.
Sympathy is given far too much for people succumbing to their own vices and/or stupidity. We have created a society of people looking for sympathy for their own choices. Some on here will show great sympathy for these young adults and their own stupidity, yet children murdered around the world at no fault of their own get none from those same people. That is where hypocrisy exists.

I didn't express contempt. Not feeling extreme sympathy for morons choosing to be great examples of Darwin's theories is not contempt. It's common sense. They made a choice and found the consequences. That doesn't mean that if a college student reached out for help, I wouldn't give it to them.
