How's the AC work in a Houston summer with that stop and start engine?

My wife's car can go from Atlanta to Baton Rouge, ~ 527 miles on a single fill up at the gas station next to the house. That's doing about 75mph cruise control set. And air conditioner on (we usually go during the summer). My F-150 would take 3 fill ups, LOL.

I have a 2l diesel Euro ford Kuga that I get 40mpg with. Not oozing sex appeal, but it's a good little SUV with 4wd.

I will have to check out the Cruze. Had the VW TDI Jetta and while boring to look at it was fun to drive. Driving the Prius is like driving a motorized grocery cart.

This week, Chevrolet announced that its new 2017 diesel Cruze will get a jaw-dropping 52 mpg on the highway, making it the car with the best fuel economy among non-hybrid and non-electric models in America.

Early models were targeted to those seeking fuel efficiency over all else, and the EPA rated the 1.3-liter four-cylinder 1984 Honda CRX at an astonishing 68 MPG in highway driving. The car’s aerodynamic shape certainly helped, as did its tall gearing and curb weight of just 1,713 pounds, virtually unattainable in a moderately priced production car today. Despite its featherweight construction, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  gave the 1984 Honda CRX five stars in driver frontal-impact crash protection, and four stars in passenger frontal-impact protection, though it’s worth noting that 1984 crash testing standards were far more forgiving than they are today.

Thanks Obama

Mind you the CR-X also did that with regular gas not diesel.

This isn't an issue until after hundreds of thousands of miles, if it's ever an issue. At least with the 2010-up models.

My 2007 with 259k miles is on its original battery. I conseratively estimate that I have saved $35k in fuel costs compared to my previous vehicle, an Expedition getting 14 mpg

Nice. At big mileage numbers like that the payoffs get huge. You're a rarity though. Very few people will keep a vehicle that long.

So far my diesel has saved me a bunch in fuel cost since it averages about 50mpg on my commute but maintenance isn't cheap. It's about $200 every 10k miles and in 20k miles I'll have a near $1000 scheduled service for a new timing belt. It's not a cheap car to operate but it's kinda fun to drive and that's what I care about. It's the least shitty boring car to drive that has long range and good fuel burn.

One wiped out fuel pump though and it's all over. That repair can run north of $6k if all the right things happen.

believe Jeep has a cherokee that is diesel over in Europe or Asia, that does 50mpg.

They seem to get way better options. But petrol is way more expensive over there. At least in the UK.

They are more accepting of diesel cars, don't demand horsepower like Americans do, and have more lax emissions laws for the small diesel cars.

Dial the power back and slow the car down and the fuel economy is easy. I can easily average close to 60mpg highway in my car if I try hard enough.

Not with a turbocharged diesel.

Mine has a 2 liter with similar power numbers and will give the traction control work if you ask it to.

I can go from the 10/610 split in Metairie to Buckhead in one tank going 85 the entire way. Definitely a pucker factor at the end, but I can make it. 04 2500HD gas
