I think the Cruze uses a DEF setup that VW was trying to avoid with the cheat. The previous generation Cruze had a 2.0L diesel option with DEF that had a small but loyal following.
The new redesigns of the 2018 Chevy Equinox and Mazda CX-5 will also have diesels by summer of similar displacement.
If you are a fan of diesels, you are about to get a couple of more options.

Get used to it. It will be impossible to avoid in a couple of years. Government is pushing it to reduce idle emissions.

Hybrids almost always get better gas mileage in the city. Mine will get 42-44 in the city and 39 on the interstate. It stays in electric mode up to 45 mph if you're light on the acceleration. Starting and stopping in the city ends up not affecting the gasoline engine.

Since Consumer Reports recently included the Cruze in its 10 Most Reliable Cars, I rolled the dice and bought one for my 19 yr. old. It was a 2016 low miles dealer demo, Certified Used Car. Got a great price. So I guess I will see how it goes.
Normally I would not consider a Chevy, but Car and Driver and Motor Trend were both complimentary of the Cruze in comparison articles they did. I am hopefully optimistic. It's got to be better than that piece of shite 2003 BMW 525i salvage title breakdown nightmare his Mom got for him to use.

I think the main problem with them is lubrication. Secondary problem is starter/battery life, but that is solved by having a hybrid with a good charging system.
I'm guessing they have designed a way to keep oil pressure up when the engine is off so everything has oil for startup, but I haven't ever cared enough to look into that garbage technology. It it a stupid concept anyway.
In my mind, manufacturers are taking shortcuts using poor technology to make minimal gains. There are just a bunch of idiots telling nerds what to do.
The best technology that I can think of while taking this smoke break is the downhill recharging systems used on hybrids. People in LA forget that the world isn't flat like here.

Nice. Didn't know they did that with the Cruze. I know they loved the new Impala though.

The starters are much more robust in start/stop systems fwiw. Many have two solenoids, one that gets the starter up to the speed of the engine and another that engages the starter gear.
Most of the charging comes from regenerative braking, not downhill/grade assist.

I just want to make sure I'm correct....during normal forward driving, the motor acts as a motor. It only switches to a charging system once the brakes are applied for a certain amount of time (or maybe instantaneously)? So it doesn't charge when coasting?

I don't think any of the start/stop features in traditional Chevrolets, Fords, BMWs, or Nissans actually have an electric motor that moves the car. You take your foot off the brake and the engine starts up. By the time your foot is on the gas the engine is running. It's not as smooth as just leaving the engine on but it works well.
The hybrid models, such as the Prius or Malibu Hybrid do have electric propulsion though. They can move under electric power and they have the regen brakes.

I think there are some that do. I can only speak to the Ford/Lincoln hybrids, since that's what my research was based around. The coasting charging is more common in fully electric vehicles.
For my MKZ, the instant you press the brakes, the electric motor reverses. It uses the energy of your forward momentum to charge the battery.

For all the people knocking this thing's power...if you pull the traction/stability control fuse on a turbo'd gas engine Cruze with a manual, you can make it do a burnout fairly easily in first gear, and that's with 150 lb-ft. The diesel, with 240 lb-ft and a quick-spooling turbo? You'd need new tires every 10k.

9 years on my daughter's Prius that has 225,000 miles on it and batteries are still going strong. Don't know the math, but I'm pretty sure it offsets $4k if her battery ever needs replacing.
