Getting the advertised mpg for a Prius is pretty simple. I cruise between 75-80 on the interstate and am usually within 2 mpg of the rating. When I actually try, getting 52-55 mpg is not terribly difficult

Why would they make a car with a Diesel engine? No woman's gonna be able to figure out how to put diesel instead of gas into it

This is pretty much my exact car. Ford Fusion Hybrid Titanium.

Real world I average about 43 mpg (interstate and city). Close to 200 HP. Very nice inside, completely loaded with everything you can think of. I've been extremely happy with it, and not too expensive.

Honda did this in the 80s

Sure but those Honda cars from the 80s probably weighed a frick ton less b/c they lack all of the modern safety equipment that is in that Cruz. Those old Honda's wouldn't be rocking that milage if they had all the modern tech stuffed in there.

I don't care if it gets 2000 miles on a single tank, I still wouldn't drive it. I need a truck for all my hobbies.

You have to eventually replace the batteries in the Prius after several years. That can set you back almost $4,000 out of warranty.

I've got 200K on my 2010. Never replaced a battery.

The "prius battery will die after a few years" is a story that I keep hearing. My local dealership has never replaced a Prius battery.

My dad had to put new ones in his Accord Hybrid. Obviously a different manufacturer, but it does need to be done from time to time. Also, his car was a 2005 model, so perhaps they've improved a good bit since then.

If fuel efficiency was my biggest selling point I would buy the most expensive Honda Civic offered. It's around the same price as a baseline Prius and Cruz and you get nicer features and only sacrifice about 10mpg.

there are a shite load of diesel versions of american cars that get great gas mileage.

For some reason, they will not produce them here or sell them here.

I believe Jeep has a cherokee that is diesel over in Europe or Asia, that does 50mpg.

the prius is way uglier though.

I've hung 100k miles on a Volkswagen diesel w/ 6spd in 2 years. I've drove plenty of economy cars.

The main appeal of the diesel is it gets better fuel mileage than comparable gassers and doesn't completely suck arse to drive. It's got some pep to it. Will it save you money over the life of the car? Maybe. Maybe not. Depends how well you care for it and how often it breaks. But, it doesn't suck to drive. It's about as fun as a front wheel drive car can be to drive.

Listening to men brag about their gas mileage is about as exciting as listening in on a Star Trek conversation.

I would seriously consider a mid sized version of that car.

I know the new Equinox is getting a diesel.

52mpg in a non-hybrid car is pretty awesome.

The new Kia Niro is a small crossover and starts at just over $19,000. Fairly well equipped at that price too. gets 48 on the interstate, and 52 in the city.

I think the Prius might have more room in it though. Niro was well designed and maximized the space, just really small.

Edit: after seeing the pics of the 2017 Prius, never mind about the size. Niro is a much better looking car too.

The new Prius is hideous. I read that sales were down a lot with the new model. Easy to see why.

They are definitely helping competitors like Chevy or Honda grab parts of that market with styling like that. The Volt and Cruze diesel look much better.
