LIVERMORE, Calif. (AP) — Most fast food workers in California will be paid at least $20 an hour beginning Monday when a new law is scheduled to kick in giving more financial security to an historically low-paying profession while threatening to raise prices in a state already known for its high cost of living.

Democrats in the state Legislature passed the law last year in part as an acknowledgement that many of the more than 500,000 people who work in fast food restaurants are not teenagers earning some spending money, but adults working to support their families.

Increasing his employees’ wages will cost Johnson about $470,000 each year. He will have to raise prices anywhere from 5% to 15% at his stores, and is no longer hiring or seeking to open new locations in California, he said.

At least they included the obvious part no one wants to talk about

I wonder if needing very little skills or experience has anything to do with that

The technology will eventually exist where one or two people making $25/hour can run a whole fast food drive thru operation with automated machinery and processes.
Pull up, speak, pull forward, window opens and your food slides out.

Why $20? Who can live on that in CA?

Make it at least $50.

New fast-food restaurants already have a lot fewer employees it seems. More kiosks and app ordering and 1 register.

This will just lead to fewer of those jobs.

So you think everyone who works at fast food is a squatter? Those people make up less than .1%.

Lololol and $30 is about to be nothing there.

So now the few workers that survived the great house cleaning have less purchasing power than before

You old bums can’t relate to anything these days.

If you had it your way they work at 7.25 an hour and need to work 200 hours to afford a studio apt
