My experience this morning at the Honda dealership made me think of this thread. I need to replace a wheel bearing and do an alignment. They quoted me just over $1,000 total. I know nothing about cars but that seemed high so I said “hold on, let me google that.” I googled the average cost for wheel bearing replacement and it was $200 to $500.
I told him what I found out and they need to come down in price. He said he can take 10% off, which was still 100% higher than what it should cost. I said bring it down to $750 and I’ll sign right now, he said no can do.
The first independent repair shop I called quoted me $250 for the wheel bearing replacement.
How on earth in the Information Age and age of hypersensitivity to business ethics do dealerships continue to get away with this shite?

So, I'm guessing you're not an engineer?

I actually am. I mostly do fracture mechanics for steel pressure vessels.

You know what having to be tight with money has taught me?
A ton of work that we pay mechanics to do to our vehicles is actually pretty straightforward and can easily be done at home for a fraction of the cost of a mechanic.

Dick heads at diamond Mazda tried to get over a couple of years ago. Wife brought car in for a recall and an oil change. They asked her if there was anything else. She said just check everything. Pulled up to get the car next day. She was handed a $750 bill. They changed oil, flushed transmission and flushed radiator First they tried to tell me she authorized service. I asked if they let her know how much this will cost. The service manager said that “ we always call to let customer know the quote” went home and printed up my wife telephone bills. By this point I am furious. First I yelled at the girl in service. She almost started to cry. Then the service manager who had been a jerk before, changed his whole tone when I threw the telephone bill on his desk and asked him where it shows that they called back with a quote. Started saying it was a mistake and they did work on the wrong car. Which was bullshite. Basically he said as long as I pay for the cost of the products he would wave all other charges. Paid about $60 and never will go back

Front or rear bearing?

If that $250 quote includes parts, that's a pretty decent deal.

He said it did. We will see though once he actually gets to working on it. I will be thrilled if it actually comes out to $250.
