its 220 -5 =215

its 2 hundred circles and 1 ten circle and one diagonal ten circle for the 220, and then 5 singles

Edit: this is common core bull shite.

I'm assuming 5 bubbled ones below that line on the right?

It looks like 200 + 10 + 5

It's so weird seeing it written down like that, but it's also how I do math in my head so I kind of get it.

Wrong. You forgot the 300 scratched out in the hundreds column. So it starts out in the 500s.

Nope, we're just teaching different methods for different situations to instill math competence. See how this is #3 on the sheet? that's because it's part of this larger assignment:

LINK

Notice that the largest section asks for the more "traditional" method?

Whoever thought this was a good idea should no longer be allowed in education.

I consider myself excellent at math. Crushed it in high school and college up through Calc 3.

I don’t know what the frick this is.

Ah, so it is 530-315=215. Strange way to do math.

Edit**

I dunno, screw that. I would have written 216-1=215 and failed it as a kid.

Kids are either going to get it or not get it, and the 'get it' usually doesn't really happen until pre-Algebra. There is nothing to really 'get' with basic addition/subtraction/etc.
